Okay, I want to start learning PHP, and the tutorial said to download "PHP windows". I downloaded it and tryed installing it.....however it does not do anything, it put files in the folder, but is there a .exe file somewhere I am missing? And the samething is happening with mySQL. It is more than likely something I am doing wrong, but help would be nice!
Also do you have to use a program to write PHP code? Or can you just use a text editor like some other codes?
Php Editor?Help getting the program to work.

you can use notepad if you want, but code editors normally color the syntax which is always helpfull. if you are going to get a code editor. go with Dreamweaver MX it does everything.

Dreamweaver might do everything but it's also stinking expensive. :)
If all you need is colour coding, line numbering, etc, get Edit Plus. It's $30 and it rocks.

I'm having a similar problem, I use php and mysql on my webserver which is fine.
But I wanted to install it on my win98 system so I don't have to upload everything to test it, I installed php and it has failed to work.
Apparently this has something to do with the fact that I need to set up a server, but I don't have a clue how to do this

apache and mysql and all that is a big mess if you just want to learn php locally. the best thing is to get foxserv. its an emulator, its smaller, and its tons easier to use. you can get it at www.foxserv.net the latest version is 3.0 but i still prefer the old 2.1 as 3.0 still has a lot of bugs.
php edior can be any text editor. editplus is one of the best programs ever, which i highly recomend. but dreamweaver mx is excellent if you have the money. makes mysql development easier than hell too.

Dreamweaver makes a mess of everything, If you don't know HTML I'd recomend it for HTML editing but other than that nothing more, I've tried MX and don't like it at all for coding, I use a GREAT program, for pretty much everything, it's called editplus It has everything you need and more, colors syntax of course, You can save projects.. so say, you're making a PHP script that's several files, you can save a project file, then open that 1 file and it will open all the files in that project, you can even have one of the tabs a browser.. and much, much, much more, it backs up your work, just go threw all the options theres tons, I think skyhawk turned me onto editplus a long time ago, I use it for EVERYTHING!! html, css, PHP, javascript perl, xml.. I can go on all night, it's only 30 dollars too, I used the trial for a bit and was very impressed, I purchased it right away
well worth it!

If you want an IDE then Komodo is a great choice and has active debugging for Perl, Python, XSLT and also supports (including code highlighting etc.) just about every language you can think of.
