I just got finished reading this article "The real reason Bill Gates wants to life the cap on H-1B Visas" (That link links to similar discussions and articles.) So, I thought I'd bring it over to you guys who are already in the industry and see what you think.

Well, speaking from someone who isn't in this industry yet, I'm on the fence. I'm all for letting people do what they want. But, in certain instances, we have to take care of our own first. Then, we accommodate all others.

A bunch of replies say that there is no real IT shortage, just a shortage of employers who are willing to pay decent salaries for a standard 40 hour week. I know there are tons of people graduating from schools with IT related degrees (even from diploma-mills such as DeVry and such). So I can't even imagine a shortage.

But do people on work visas really work for less and for longer hours? I don't think they pay taxes, either? I would speak my opinions on that, too, but that's another area I know nothing about.

Well, having just gone though the IT job search I can tell you that the excuse that "there are just not enough IT workers" is just plane crazy. I think congress should be able check the employment sites and clearly see that there are more than enough resumes out there.

However, it may be that the HR people are having troubles spotting them.

I'd say that Bill Gates just wants to save himself money, just like every other company, why else do they outsource every job they can?

Bill Gates doesn't have an agenda right now, hes leaving the company in 6 months.

The number of H-1B visas really is ridiculously low, only 65,000 before this latest bill , per year.

Bill gates is leaving the company? He owns it? why would he leave and not just retire and let someone else manage it?

I dont understand that whole shareholders thing, how is he then the owner of the company?

He owns enough stock to be the CEO. Microsoft is a corporation, not a sole proprietorship.

Um no. A CEO is not required to own the majority of stock in a company to be in that position.

INTRO TO BUSINESS 101:


Companies sell stock (usually common) to raise money for their business. In turn the investors expect the company to grow and to pay a dividend every once in a while.

Definition:

dividend: a payment to stockholders of a corporation that is taxable as interest

Now there is a magical place called the stock market. Here people called traders buy and sell stock and other equities.

Definition:

equity: commodities, stock (large, medium, and small cap), and sometimes bonds


THERE is much more to this subject then what I posted, but perhaps this will bring you out of ignorance. I'll take 50 dream kudos for this tutorial

You can't say that you yourself is always right capty, thats not how it works.

Am I correct when I say that if bill gates owns lets say 60% of the stock for M$ that he has 60% say in a vote of what the company does. So in a more realistic situation where he has 30%, and something needs to be decided, he has 30% of the say?

the fact of the matter is bill gates holds about 857,499,336 shares of microsoft. (number as of nov. 2007)

there are currently 9.3 billion shares of microsoft out, so he holds right at about 10 % of the company.

therefore he would need the votes of 41% of microsoft to do anything big for the company.
