So I've been working on my resume lately. I thought of using a 1 page resume, highlighting my IT job the most, and then the past couple "big" companies I've worked for.

Just as a heads up - if you are uploading your resume, it would be a good practice uploading it in PDF format. There are free tools and plugins (including for Office 2007/2010) that allow saving as PDF.

Or, if you're still rocking Office 2003 like me, you can install CutePDF.

Office 2010 has native support for saving a document as a PDF file (I've been rocking 2010 since they made it available to MSDN subscribers)

I updated my resume, new layout but not much else has changed. Constructive criticism welcome.

It looks ok, i would switch your Job history starting with the most recent and going back, also i would make sure that if you do go beyond one page that you don't have paragraphs that bleed over. When i open yours the NCR Self-Checkout Helpdesk Technician part bleeds to the 2nd page. Also i would write out what your certs mean. DCSE and CIW might mean something to you, but when i read it i have no idea what they mean. It could potentially turn off an employer when they see that. Beyond that it looks good.

Here's my full package.

I've included the cover letter and my 2 Page resume. The resume was created with the help of a man who was not only a full-bird Marine Colonel, but is now the president of a very large defense company. He knows his stuff.

I have also included what I put in my interview folder. Work Profile, Letters of recommendation and references (not included in this package).

I have taken out most of my personal information, but I think you'll get a good idea how it all fits together.

When I get to the interview I have a 2 pocket folder. My cover letter and 2 page resume are on the left. (But the interviewer should already have this.

On the right side is my work profile, recommendation and references. Generally I bring 3 or 4 folders in case there are multiple interviewers.

There is a method to my madness.

Well after going through several edits over the years of working I've found that migrating from Word documents to PDf's can make you stand out much more in the competition.

A resume is a first impression that you can't change, only help modify after the fact (they schedule for an interview after you submit the resume). Although the content of your resume is always important, don't kid yourself into thinking that design, layout, and presentation don't count for anything.

Especially if your next contract is design or style based, thematic elements can be come important. I always remember hearing and watching biz executives say you only have seconds to catch my attention with a resume, so hopefully my latest re-design using Photoshop CS3 allows me to bring this to light even though I'm a developer at heart, not a designer.

I do however have many lady friends with a keen eye for design, style and flair (not the explosive, fire trail-type either). Please let me know what you think as it's a bit different that the conventional "resume." It's a representation of me, as a brand. My brand. Not just a plain type word document.

An important note though is although I lock my .pdf files from editing, you should always make sure text is highlight-able and can be copied for any recruiting companies. Otherwise they won't be able to parse your resume and might reject you. That's never good when you're looking for work.
