You be the doctor!

Posted 24 April 2008 - 11:16 AM

The past two weeks now, every day at about 1:00-3:00, I have been getting a headache. Not like a pounding sort or anything, it's just really annoying. So I got to wondering, maybe it is caffeine related? I've never been one to be affected by caffeine (I can still drink a pot and then fall asleep in 10 minutes) but I might be finding a pattern in my work day. I have the headache until seemingly after I have an afternoon cup.

What my question is, does anyone else experience anything similar? Caffeine headaches of the sort. Like you drink a coffee or soda and BAM, headaches gone? I just want to make sure I'm normal (and if I should curve my coffee consumption or not).

Bonus question: Do you need that extra midday boost? What other things might you rely on in order to get through the day?

It might be your eating habits. Your blood sugar might drop at around that time, and if you drink a soda that brings the level back up, which would make the headache go away.

Do you eat at basically the same time everyday?

OR, it is related to caffeine.

I just wanted to let you know - you mention being able to "drink a pot and fall asleep in 10 minutes", but that's totally fine - caffeine takes about 20 minutes to kick in(or so I'm told).

This reassures me that I at least have normal reactions. :) I find it bothersome that I my be dependant on caffeine, however. D'oh!

I got some tea now, we'll see if that does anything.

the old (i think dr.pepper) campaign with the 10 2 and 6 or whatever.
those could the entirely wrong numbers, but 2 is one of them...

was actually backed by scientific research that found people started losing energy at those times of the day (mainly the 2)....

i went to the dr.pepper museum
it was awesome.

found it :

Quote

What does 10-2-4 mean?

Those well-known Dr Pepper numbers of 10, 2 and 4 weren’t selected at random. They represent the times of day when the human body needs a little “pick-me-up” to avoid an energy slump.

It was in the 1920s that Dr. Walter Eddy at Columbia University studied the body’s metabolism. He discovered that a natural drop in energy occurs about 10:30 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. But he also discovered that if the people in his research study had something to eat or drink at 10, 2 and 4, the energy slump could be avoided.

After Dr. Eddy’s research findings were released, Dr Pepper challenged its advertising agency to come up with a theme which would suggest that Dr Pepper should be that 10, 2 and 4 drink which would keep the energy level up. The result was one of the most enduring of Dr Pepper’s advertising themes: Drink a bite to eat at 10, 2 and 4.

Today, just those numbers 10-2-4 suggest it’s time for a Dr Pepper!

I get those also. If you look at the amount of caffeine in a cup of coffee its about 115-175 mg(drip)
Soda has roughly 35mg. Generally I will grab a soda around 2-3 to get me through the rest of the day.

I've had to cut off caffeine almost completely due to some blood pressure problems attributed to my stress at work and my sugar filled diet. It really sucks, and I've had some headaches because of it.

Yeah, I get these from time to time... as what usually gets me through the day, in the morning 1 cup of tea or coffee, lunch period more coffee or energy drink, rest of the day sloshing down pop.

Could be the sugar.

After lunch your blood sugar goes up, depending on what you had. Then, in like proportion to the up, it goes down. The sugar crash from a meal will usually be noticeable two to three hours later. This happens with any meal, but lunch is most noticeable.

If you have a little sugar when you start to go down, then you get back on the insulin roller coaster.

If caffeine is starting to give you headaches when you're not drinking it, you might want to just stop permanently. It'll go away after a week, but it'll come back pretty fast if you start again.
