Were to buy source code

Posted 11 June 2008 - 01:20 PM

I was thinking when I start to code properly a could become a small online vendor and buy source codes of good programs. I've looked it up in google, but the words are too common.
So does anyone know were I could buy some source code?

What exactly are you trying to do? If you're looking to act as a vendor to sell other people's programs, you have to contact those individual companies. Typically if you can purchase the source code to programs, they're not going to be open source, and you won't be able to simply redistribute them yourself. It really depends on what your plan is. Are you looking to sell your own apps? If so, learn to code properly first, and then think about monetization. You want to be able to write competitive, secure and efficient software before you start trying to tell it. This could really turn into a large diatride on business plans, but I'm going to keep away from that.

What source code are you looking for?
There is source code for everything, right from drivers to web applications but you'll never find them all in one place.

Could you specify what product you are interested in?
We can direct you to an appropriate website accordingly.

sounds like google or microsoft. spend loads of money on the source to unknown apps, add your touch to it, knock it out for a few 100 a go, let it slide for 5 years.. then knock out an "all new kick ass" version. :D

Sounds like you might want to buy a spell checker first. :)

I'm not going to knock your idea, I've heard worse, but honestly what you want to do sounds more like marketing with maybe a bit of code-maintenance rather than actual programming.

Buying the rights for a good program (though what a good program may be is highly subjective) will likely cost quite a hefty sum.

Ever heard of SourceForge? (by the way, they're free)

You don't need to buy Open Source code, that's the whole point. :)

Nothing is stopping someone from copying a BSD project and selling it (assuming they leave the copyright information intact). Kind of the downside of OSS I guess.

Sourceforge provides a terrific influx of professional and amatuer programmers to submit their sourcecode as well as working programs. This sounds more like some type of business venture than an actual programmers activity.

Source Code should not be bought. It should be shared.

Buying source code for a project that everyone uses is like purchasing the ingredient list of the fuel you put in your car.

If you write it, by all means get the recognition. If you improve it, give credit where the credit is due.

Haha, that is brilliant. I started this topic ages ago, but I'd much rather program opensource because closed source, is, well, crap. If I want a feature that I know how to add and want to share, opensource is the only way to go! :)

Yeah, my bad. I saw buying source code and had to get on my pedestal :)

I've always firmly believed that you can't really own source code. It's can't be something that only one person in the world can write. If it's the same language then it has the same capabilities no matter who writes it. Therefore, instead of hoarding the code and suffering, why not share the code and then we all learn and become better.
