What do you do when there is nothing to do?

Posted 12 June 2008 - 04:47 PM

I know it's not like this everywhere, but sometimes I find my self with nothing actually to be done in the office.
They aren't very strict on keeping tabs on what you do so I tend to usually spend my 'nothing to do ' time reading up on grey areas that I need brushing up on, and dream.in.code of course. I work for the State of Alaska Dept. of Fish and Game Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council (we really need to work on that name). Which is actually 6 different Government agencies all umbrellad under Fish and Game, so it is very autonomous, and I am allowed to use whatever tools, and program in whatever language I want to get the job done.

I'm curious as to how everyone deals with times when they have nothing to do.. Please tell me I'm not the only one.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

You should play Cincinati Time Waste. I saw it on The Simpsons and it looked like hella fun.

I surf the web, come to DIC and make sure nothing too interesting has happened on my forums (they are pretty dead so it is pretty easy to tell if anything has changed). If I am totally done with all the above I tend to do things like thinkabout starting a new personal project, adn may even start planning it out, or coding if I have the time.

It looks to me like whatever site you are pointing to in your sig image is trying to say that it is a forced download. Meaning that it is partially in php (to get the iamge and everything) which IPB doesn't allow (for the most part), if you upload it somewhere else (like photobucket or a like site) I believe it will work then.

I wish I knew how web dev was going in Co, I haven't really paid that mcuh attentiont o any of it adn haven't worried about making much for web apps lately, I am trying to get back into it, but have trouble finding the time to do the coding.

I drink coffee while reading stuff or on Dream In Code, or games or I'm programming a little something on my own.

But mostly, I sleep.

Come here, read everything that sounds even half intesting, start coding something just for the sake of it without much thought has to what it even is, and listen to the odd variety of heavy metal I've built up on my ipod over the past 4 years.

Due to my activity level here, I don't think how rarely I have these times really needs to be noted.

I think, somehow, somewhere along the way this got off topic. My understanding is what you do to eat up time on the clock, yes? While those activities sound fun, I don't think you can write those off on your time sheet. LOL! :P

Surfing the web and researching is a good time killer at work, keep it relevant and you can play it off as part of your job.

Well on the clock, I mostly play guitar and freebord in the back of the building.
