I know why I came here, and why many others did. To get help with programming problems.

But what about the rest of you? Those who help with programming problems. What do you get out of it?
I know that many of you spend a lot of time working on problems for others, and sometimes the advice you give
is not understood or (seemingly) appreciated. Yet you continue to help people anyway.

Don't get me wrong, I am not complaining. I very much appreciate your help. I just wonder why you'd be so
willing to give your time and effort with no reward for you.

To all of you who have (or will in the future) helped me, THANK YOU.

One of these days I will be good at this.

I don't know. I started out like many others, because I had programming issues adnd needed help. Since then I haven't been programming as much and haven't ran into as many problems but want to keep a profile here and let people kinow that I am at least somewhat knowledgable, so I help others out. I continue to give back to the community in hopes that someday when I have an issue again I will recieve quick, accurate, and useful help on the issue (as I hope I am able to give out to others).

I get bored while doing work, in between classes, or while I'm working on stuff, or sometimes even while I play a game. Dream In Code is easy on multitasking, hehehe*

I forget exactly how i found the site, but i taught myself C# from it..i would just read tutorials and snippets and the such. Dont really post..but i lurk around reading daily, heh.

I got started because I was looking something up and found the site. As I began to browse the site I ran across some posts that I could answer but currently had wrong/incomplete answers -- so I signed up to straiten some of these posters out.

Basically I get quite a bit out of the this. It allows me to stay sharp. Tests my knowledge, sharpens my research skills, introduces me to new material, lets me see how others do things, allows me to refocus and yet still keep my mind active (as apposed to watching the TV).

It can also be entertaining. There are some neat problems and puzzles out there. Sometimes troubleshooting a bit of code is like a riddle -- the key to the answer is noting some obscure detail about syntax or usage -- it feels good when you finally catch it (especially if you can beat out the other Gurus you see are reading the post).

Then there is sympathy. I learned to program in a vacuum. I didn't have anyone to reach out to for help. So I suppose I like the idea of helping someone like myself out. There were some problems that I struggled for years on (like getting the mouse to work in my QBasic programs, or using XMS memory in QBasic programs) -- imagine what I could have done if I had found the answers to those questions while I still had time to USE them).

I came here because i had a question, and i figured this would be an easy and quick way to solve it. The next day i got an answer. Guess i figured right.

I came looking for an answer to a simple C++ question...

Then I came back months later, and started writing tutorials, hanging out here, and such!
Now I try to help those who I can, and am learning new languages through it!
