8 years of professional experience in programming, making 32k / year USD. HMM, no wonder I have been thinking about switching jobs.

Ok, so since I voted, I will say what I do.

My official title is PC Services Consultant. Now that title carries tons of meanings. I do everything from Systems Analysis to minor app. development to stepping on our Programmers toes by coding Dylakor, and exe files. I also am training to be a systems administrator, as well as teaching myself various programming languages. I also write tons of reports using SQL in both Access and at the mainframe levels. I also only started in this position last year, and I make barely 30K/yr USD, but that is on a steady incline.

I'm a developer, working with ASP.Net. I tend to build custom web applications and DotNetNuke modules, for the most part. I'm making 33k/year CAD, and just like programming4life, that's also on a steady incline.

My title is Technical Service Specialist, and as such my primary job is related to answering the phones and telling the customer to "peel the sticker off and then insert the cartridge". My secondary job is IT, server maintenance, C# coding of a master ordering and credit program, as well as network testing. If something goes down with the servers, or telco, it's my responsibility to bring it back up, and/or work with the service provider until it's been resolved. PC Maintenance and upgrades are also under my lists of tasks.

I'm 'Programmer'. I should talk to my boss about getting a more creative title, though I'm currently the sole programmer at this company.
The numbers are lower than I was expecting, but I think the majority of the people that voted are not in senior developer positions. Any European developers on here? It seems like there are some pretty good wages in the EU, but haven't seen any reports about it.

My title is DBA. I maintain Oracle and SQL Server servers, support everything related to them. I also design databases for internal applications and write pretty much everything related to a server side app. I'm also the senior application developer, which is currently mostly .NET, both Web and Winform. That the official stuff, in practice I'll fix any problem asked of me and have worked on a myriad of things.

I've been doing it for over 15 years. When I started, I was at the first rung of the survey board, now I'm happily close to the end. Which I think is really the point. It's not just what you do, but how long you've done it and how long you've been at your current company. In a lot of places, the only difference between "Programmer", "Junior Programmer", "Senior Programmer", "Project Manager", etc, is time served. If you put in time at a job and prove reliable, you'll often find the pay check will rise as your value becomes recognized. And you get to do more and more interesting stuff.

Honestly, as a programmer at heart, I could probably make more; but then I'd have to deal with more people. People are a pain, programming is fun. Getting paid to do fun is really where it's at. ;)

actually, slashdot.org did a post a few weeks ago that said developers on average get paid more in the uk (pretty much the only job we get paid more for) than in the usa.
