Sometimes it's easy to tell why a person chose their nickname. Others are harder to tell.


Here's why I chose OliveOyl:
I was in a Christian chat room about seven years ago. You chose a different nickname every time you logged in, and you had a choice of colors for your font. People tried to pick different colors so their words would stand out from the rest and it was easier to keep track of who said what. I wasn't very imaginative, so if my font that day was red, my nickname that day was Red. One day I decided to pick the ugliest color, because it wasn't very popular, and I would be the only one with olive colored font. So my name was Olive. That was kind of plain, so I added Oyl to it. The name stuck with me, and now I'm always OliveOyl for the Internet sites I use.

I chose mine some 7 years ago as well, in an entirely different environment. I was getting Xbox Live for the first time, and needed to come up with a cool username to say who I was online. I wanted somethign that people would be able to remember, and yet something that was more than just a bunch of letters mashed together. After a while of playing around with names, and because I was into a lot of beta applications back then I decided that Beta is a cool word, and because the primary reason I was getting xbox live was for Halo 2 I chose War, upon smashing the two together I came up with BetaWar. My GamerTag, adn Username for all forums I go to.

It is fairly simple, but I enjoyed it and it began to stick with me, so I kept it.

My name was created by a psuedo-random letter generator.

My nickname d10x1d3 or dioxide, was picked at random. Most of my past nicknames have to do with a chemical name, a random word, or what ever. So then i just use numbers instead of letters to jazz it up a bit. xD

i used to use 2 nicks: goku and silverblaze.

Silverblaze is the most common one i used.

I was a great fan of Sherlock Holmes and Silverblaze is the name of a horse in one of the stories in it. When i read that story i suddenly feel so close to tht name nd i decided to make it my pet name. also i havnt seen this named used by others much. . This name is with me for the past 5yrs.

Once upon a time, many many moons ago, I was a pen and paper D&D nut.

My first character was a dwarven warrior named Aldora Benign. She was the bearded bitch.

Three years ago, when I started my Guild Wars addiction, the first character I created was a warrior named Aldora Benign - named after the D&D character.

When I was asked to make a website for my guild, just as a personal joke, I added a copyright for "BenignDesign".

The name stuck and became the name of my freelance business.

When I came to DIC, I was looking for help on a freelance project and used my business name for my username.

And here I am - from D&D nerd to code monkey. Yay!

I'm pretty sure I saw a thread like this a few months ago.

Anyway, my screen name is absolutely meaningless. It was a word that I made up in German class a few years ago, and it just really annoyed my German teacher. (I'm one of those annoying people) So it just kinda stuck.

I actually said it when I was trying to be clever and answer a question (No smart arse comments, this is when I first started learning):
Q: Say "I can't go out, because I have work [to do]"
A: "ich kann nicht ausgehen, weil ich gabe habe"
(I took gabe from Hausaufgabe)

Also I would like to note I am the one and only Nykc - there is an imposter running around on Xbox live with the Nykc handle.

I was the only Nykc since 2000.

Its easy to remember so i use biggles for most internet things
