Benefits of Virtual and Software Development

Post icon  Posted 25 June 2008 - 08:51 AM

Hello,

I am wondering everyones opinions on the benefits of running Virtual PC's during your Development process.
What do you use it for?
If you don't what do you use instead?

Is it beneficial for Web Apps as well?

Thanks,

I don't know if I would use one for a webapp, but I have a virtual Windows XP install for crossplatform testing. :^:

Beats having to reboot for everything.

I don't use them at the moment, but when I was a server admin and we were trying a new update, we'd run the updates on a set of vps nodes that ran the various flavors of linux and bsd, before pushing it to our clients servers.

The only time I've ever found VM's really helpful is in driver development. Having the ability to remote debug into a VM instance is really helpful in those situations.

The only other instance I've really seen them used is for product testing on various platforms

When I am running Linux, I do the same thing. :D

I'm using VMs more and more, both for server and desktop work.
