Well, please allow me to be the first to admit, I'm no gentleman. I open the car door for my wife, and daughter. Carry in the bags of groceries for her rain or shine, have roses delivered to her work once in a blue moon. I even go so far as to pull out her chair for her in a restraunt.
But none of those things make a man a gentleman. I cuss like a sailor, except no excuses from my daughter for failure. I don't sugar coat my answers to any questions, and don't expect to have them sugar coated to me... There is nothing gentle about my attitude...
In fact, I believe this would be a good direction for this thread to turn for a few moments... So I ask...

Ladies.. How do you define gentleman?

One of it is all about pure respect of under individuals...

also, complying to basic social ethics... that are standard (a must). - no spitting in public please..
