Dude, a program that force you to analize the code is the greatest way... for example the notepad included in windows. AS many people say notepad++ (i suppose you're in windows because you use dreamweaver) is an excelent option, but you have others options with syntax highlight (it's a little help when you start coding) like sublime text 2, edit plus 3, emacs, vi, etc. I strongly recommend the use of tools than don't help you a lot.

Doesn't matter what environmement you use, as long as it's posix compliant.

A real OS is a development environment - anything else is second-best.
