The end of Netscape?

Posted 05 July 2008 - 08:22 AM

I just went to download Netscape, and they've stopped developing! :o

I don't know if this is news to you or not, but I was kinda shocked...

I thought I'd add a poll here, just to see what your favourite is... personally, I quite like Flock.

Discuss :)

AOL Netscape was awful.

I stopped using Firefox at version 2 because of how bloated it was. Up until recently I've used a browser called Galeon.

I switched to Firefox 3 the other day. It's the first time a version of Firefox has actually offered useful features not present in a previous version (and the first time performance has been, or at least seemed to be, better). :)

Yeah Netscape development stopped recently and it has been in all the tech magazines/blogs. Keep up with the industry man! ;)

Firefox is the bomb as far as I am concerned. When other browsers start ripping off features from Firefox then you know it is good.

:)

I also agree with the 90% of the world that use firefox as there main browser. I also sometimes use opera, safari, and ie, as they also have some features i like. I'm sorry, but flock is really just trash. It uses firefox's engine, and to me, anything flock can do firefox can do better. A lot better.

Safari by default, Minefield ( Firefox 3.0 optimized for Mac OS X ) for development.

I'm using Firefox right now only because it seems to display most websites better than Maxthon 2, despite the fact that Maxthon is much better on memory usage than Firefox. Oh well, seems like you have to pick one or the other :(

I use IE because it is what I have used my whole life and I enjoy it (though I will stick with IE 6 whenever possible). IE 7 annoys me with everything other than the new tabs feature (new being a relative term). IE 6 it is for me :)

(Not a big fan of FF either, though I do have it on my computer)

I use to be a huge Netscape fan. In fact, I was using it since version 3.something.

I still think Netscape 8.x kicks ass. The main feature I love, that the other browsers don't have, is a extremely powerful security system. You could actually specify what scripts and what not are enabled on each site. This includes things like Javascript, Java (which I never enable), ActiveX, images, external references, and a few other things. Plus, it let you choose to use the Gecko rendering engine, or the IE rendering engine (before IE tab existed). The main disadvantage was it wasn't exactly stable.

Netscape 9.x was just a re banded version of Firefox. I believe the release of Netscape 9 was it's official death.

Firefox 3 and Safari 3. I'm still not convinced which one is best, and most will say Firefox is, but I like Safari more. So we'll see when I run into a brick wall. :P

I have both on my computer. Safari is faster to load (but then anything is) and more lean than firefox in my opinion, but i still think firefox is the best for most tasks. Of course, i have a windows comp, it might be different on mac.

I have not tried FireFox 3 just yet.

However, I do have a customer who prefers to still use the AOL browser, even though RoadRunner is her ISP! It's like, what the hell lady, do you enjoy personal setbacks?

I quite enjoy Netscape Composer for editing HTML, it's nicely lightweight and has everything I need including character support for Japanese, but I never use Netscape as a browser strangely.
