Making a game maker.

Posted 14 July 2008 - 12:30 AM

Hi i was wondering if it was possible to make a game maker in Visual Studio 2008

*have you ever used Rpg maker xp ?
thats basicly what i want to learn how to do.

there are three main things i want to know.

1)How to make an area to alow a graphic to be draged from a pallete onto
the work area

2)To make something to build the game (Like a testplay button)

3)Have a undo and redo function?

is this possible or is it really hard?

Anything's possible.

But it takes a lot of work. Basically, a game maker is a code generator~ you have to be pretty damn good with making games to be able to generate everything you need ;)

You want to look up game engines. It is probably easier to just use an existing engine to make games though because it is A LOT of work. I am working on mine, and it will take forever since I do not have any assistance other than people here...but I have nothing but time, and I am really wanting to learn to do it myself.

If you are wanting to stick with doing it on your own like me, sourceforge.net has some pre-existing engines available, and a simple search on google for something like "C++, C#, Java Game Engines", a lot of which are open sourced so you can tweak it however you want to. As far as using VS2K8 for making your own engine, C# and XNA or DirectX9 will help...XNAtutorial.com is a good start.

Also search for:
Elysium source
HGE (haalf's game engine)

But I must warn you, I have spent over 50+ hours just researching on the net, not to mention the countless hours of skimming over books so I can figure out which language I want to go with. Read topics on this game forum even if the topic does not seem to be what you are looking for.

Good luck! :D

I started out with 10 people that wanted to help...a lot of great ideas, but that's all they were was ideas. Everyone wants to make a game, and everyone has the next best thing to WoW. But no one wants to start small, by making very small games and functions just to see how they work.

Having a crew is great though, as long as you are not the only one wanting to learn how to program the engine. You might want to weed out ppl that aren't really interrested in the beginning to keep from having empty promises for thier portion. But since I have started out on my own, I have gotten way more accomplished because I am NOT trying to make the next WoW.

And just a note, it's not stupid to do it on your own, it goes down to planning, determination and time. It is easier with more ppl involved, but everyone has to be on the same train, which often leads to conflicts within the group. You might all have the same idea, but certain aspects of the design process, or graphics/sounds might cause problems.

1) It's called a map editor...Google Mappy.

2) It is called a compiler...Google game engines.

3) Undo/redo for what?

You are wanting information on pretty much the entire system...kinda way around "how do me and my peeps make a game". Doing this in Visual Studio 2008 is possible with C# and XNA, also C++ and DirectX...those are the most used for making a game engine.

Which language in VS2K8 does your group have experience in programming with?

You need to decide which language the code will be generated in, too...

Most games use C/C++ or Java, so a game maker would take a knowledge of a few languages. (very few games are made in VB.NET, and even fewer are successful... I can't even name one.)

But then again, .NET stuff might be your best bet for making the actual interface for the program.

A friend of mine made a tile generator, engine, etc all in Java, and it works pretty damn well :)

We are quite exprienced in Visual Basic.

Yh we will be using Visual basic for the interface.

or well will just use C# for all of it. not quite sure yet.

Oh and the undo redo button will be for when a user drags and drops a graphic on to the work area, then deletes it by accident then uses the undo button to bring back the graphic, or uses redo to delte it again.

Why not just post a screenshot since most parts are non-functioning...some people may not want to use the installer.

Oh my god. I just realised you just uploaded the setup files and NONE of all the other files...

You must include ALL the files in your "publish" folder in the upload, otherwise we can't run the app....
