Don't Discuss Projects Over IM

Posted 24 July 2008 - 12:46 PM

So I was discussing a potential project with a buddy of mine, trying to figure out what framework we were going to use and the conversation instantly took a tangent 2 minutes in. That made me think about how quickly you could get distracted on IM talking about something. The following is my conversation with him. Look at how quickly we go off tangent.

Quote

dys (3:36:12 PM): it has kind of a sharp learning curve
dys(3:36:18 PM): but its pretty powerful
duke(3:36:24 PM): hmm
duke(3:36:37 PM): but would we use the power?
dys(3:36:45 PM): yea thats the thing
duke(3:37:00 PM): I don't wanna use a semi truck to go down the street for groceries, you know?
duke(3:37:08 PM): lol
duke(3:37:13 PM): I <3 analogies
dys(3:37:48 PM): especially with gas prices the way they are!
dys(3:37:56 PM): <--- missed the analogy on purpose
duke(3:38:13 PM): lol
duke(3:38:39 PM): I'm glad bandwidth isn't proportional to gas prices
duke(3:38:44 PM): that's what we need to do
duke(3:38:48 PM): enginner a car that runs on bandwidth
dys(3:39:03 PM): theyre trying to cap it
duke(3:39:06 PM): we could call it the Gigawheel
dys(3:39:06 PM): have you been reading about that?
duke(3:39:09 PM): no
dys(3:39:21 PM): yea certain areas they want to put a 50gig cap or something
dys(3:39:25 PM): and then charge you when you go over
duke(3:39:29 PM): weak
duke(3:39:47 PM): that's not cool man
dys(3:39:50 PM): i would hate that
duke(3:39:51 PM): I'll revolt
dys(3:40:00 PM): net neutrality and unlimitedness
duke(3:40:08 PM): power tot he people
duke(3:40:15 PM): you know what's great?
duke(3:40:26 PM): how quickly we went off on a tangent
dys(3:40:30 PM): haha
dys(3:40:34 PM): thats what were good at
duke(3:40:34 PM): and if you read back, you can see exactly how it happened
duke(3:41:03 PM): probably the perfect reason why you can't discuss projects on im

Absolutely agree with the topic title. Better to discuss projects over a forum or just meet somewhere.

Pixel, thanks for quoting the full post that came immediately before yours...I may not have understood what you were referencing.

As an FYI, up here bandwidth caps are fast becoming the de facto (although largely unadvertised) standard.

That sucks man, we're still without bandwidth caps down here. I understand why they would do it, but it would still be the suck. Do you have any problems with it where you're at?

I have very large problem with it on a personal level - for years, ISPs have advertised so-called 'Unlimited' plans, but as time has gone by, caps and traffic shaping/throttling have slowly crept in. I do understand why ISPs are moving that way - it's a monetization of their services and infrastructure, I just don't personally like it. Most of them have also implemented it with extremely limited and well hidden ToS docs, and very limited visibility. Of course, these are the same companies that recently announced a $0.15 charge for...wait for it...every text message you RECEIVE!

As it becomes more and more of a reality, we are seeing a number of legal challenges from both end users and from smaller ISPs that wholesale from the infrastructure holders who do not wish to cap/shape/throttle.

The next few years should see some interesting legal precedent set...although I'm quite skeptical it will resolve on the side of the end user.

The funniest thing that happened here was an ISP apprehending 5 or 6 subscribers of their "unlimited" plan for generating excess traffic - these were home users, not some company. (And as a free advertisement another one offered them their service at a cut price right away)
Anyway, here even server hosting has unlimited quota, I hope it stays this way for a while.

Awesome, maybe we can revert back to IRC to save on bandwidth.
