This isn't good for my health....

Posted 25 July 2008 - 03:41 AM

I just deliberately inserted a Sco Unix disk into my CD-rom drive so I can make a backup copy of it...

The reason we need a backup copy? cos I can't snap the damn things in half until november next year when we finally ditch this damn system.

So my question to you is, whats the crappiest system you have to work with in your current job?

Many large scale enterprise organizations chose not to upgrade to Vista for a few reasons - namely the increased system requirements that would necessitate large scale hardware upgrades, and the fact that due to Vista's poor adoption rate, Microsoft has advanced the release program for the next OS. The combination of those two factors have led many organizations to wait for the next release.

I did not mean my comments to be interpreted as a negative view of Vista...was merely explaining why many large scale organizations have not made mass upgrades from XP (including my own).

IN my current job... XMLSpy.

We all thought it was the Sh*t at first, but once I got it I learned to hate it.

First off, it is not a complete program but a big ad for all the other Altova products. So you click on some feature in the menu and get told that inoder to use that you need to spend another 500$. I suppose that if you buy the suit of programs you may have a great collection of software but I say that it is just not worth the aggravation when the competing products are cheaper and far less aggravating.

Mostly XP systems in the office, 2 Vista boxes. All of our servers are on Server 2000 with the exception of the 9 rack mounted provisioning & diagnostics machines that run Red Hat Enterprise and 1 server that's on 2003. Our Asterisk-based PBX server runs Red Hat also I think.

The only headache right now is Server 2000, we're creating a project to upgrade everything to 2003 in the next month and a small rollout of Server 2008 on some new machines.

By the end of August I'm looking at overseeing about 29-30 servers total.

It's a tie with me between Vista and Linux for the worst, and yes, the Mac computers have better operating systems than those two. You have to understand, I'm a video game programmer, so Linux just doesn't do anything for me and Vista's RAM requirements drove me to insanity. Sure Vista works but I don't want to need more GB of RAM when I can just stay with XP and use the same programs. Mac doesn't game but at least it's compatible with the graphic part of the job.

I love XP and I'm waiting for the OS after vista as well.

I'm not to excited about windows 7, because it can just as easily be as bad or worse than Vista. Looks like I'm doomed.
