I just think of things Id like to try. Like there was a question here on DIC wanting to know how to read POP3 emails (such as Gmail, etc) so I set out creating two applications (one web based, one Windows based) that can accomplish this task. Once they're complete and bug free I'm going to be writing a 2 part tutorial on doing it.
You should never run out of things to program, just shouldn't even be possible, at least in my opinion
you must work alone in an office with no intended end users. Cause those suckers just breath problems.
I actually work in a large corporation with thousands of end users. Lucky enough though, I don't have to work with their in-house business software. That's all out sourced. I am just the network administrator and database administrator.
Hence, anything I write is usually just to make my job easier or quicker Then I have more time to spend on DIC.
