Just thought I'd post and say that Ubuntu 8.04 runs beautifully on my laptop.

All drivers and devices detected and setup properly on first boot. That includes sound, 3d acceleration, wireless, etc. I didn't have to touch a thing. Booted up to a resolution of 1920x1200.

It's a Dell Latitude D810, if you run Linux and are shopping for a new laptop. I highly recommend it.

I have the Dell Inspiron 1526 and Ubuntu 8.04 runs as efficient if not more efficient than Vista.

I haven't any any issues either with Ubuntu 7.10 or upgrading to 8.04

I've never really been on the Ubuntu bandwagon but I must say I'm quite impressed with it.

Edit: I must say I'm really enjoying the Darklooks GTK theme.

Yes, I love that theme. Makes me feel like a 90's hacker

I was looking at playing around with Open SuSE lately due to a few companies around here that use that OS and they were hiring web developers.

Suse has always been a distro that I've liked for the most part. Package management has always been awful though, and that's been one of the main things keeping me away from it.

But then again, I really haven't used Suse since ten-dot-something, perhaps I'll plug it into a virtual machine and give it a whirl.

I tried working with a live CD but it did not copy correctly. I need to re-download and give it a whirl.

I like Ubuntu because it has just worked for me, but I really need to explore other Linux options as well.

Ubuntu in the past was just Debian with a new theme, which is why I have never seriously used it up until now.

I used Fedora Core 2 for a year or two, then I switched over to Suse 9.1 for a year or two.

I've tried Gentoo, Mandrake (now Mandriva), numerous livecd's based on Debian, Slackware, and a few other distros I can't remember.

Downloading the KDE4 and Gnome livecds for OpenSuse now.

Good idea, I still haven't really accepted KDE yet - I looked at it in Ubuntu 7.10 and hurried up and put Gnome on it.

Im on my way to try Mandriva and OpenSuSE.

Fedora 8 kind of rubbed me the wrong way when I looked at it, it was still in Beta at the time though I believe.

i like ubuntu a lot as well, though i've been testing out backtrack 2 and 3 and I like those distros as well...it's been fun to reexamine some of the things i did as a kid and to see the new toys there.

I stay away from Ubuntu alpha/betas, they scare me.

I've never really been a KDE fan, just thoght I would try out the new version though.

Edit: Ok, KDE4 crashed on me, on the LiveCD. No I was not doing anything crazy.

Yes, you only need bleeding edge software if you don't plan on living until something that is stable comes out.

I believe I have a Ubuntu 8. something VM running on another computer of mine. Then I have a full blown Ubuntu 6. something machine (which isn't upgraded only because it can't run the new software...).

Linux is buggy. I don't have the best view of Linux because most of my interaction with it has been when it is broken: "Hey I was trying to install a duel boot with Linux and it does not seem to be working... Nick could you take a look" this is further exacerbated by the fact that I don't know exactly what I am doing so these are always very frustrating experiance.


However recently I have been getting more and more exposure to Linux (work) and it is slowly raising on my opinion.

Incompetence != buggy.

Ubuntu is buggy, other distros are not.

Glad to know linux is liking you. Still having major pains trying to get mine to work.
