each what? Vid cards? Or my computers?

Highly doubt that. Had a 600W that I had to replace with a 850W because when my second video card would go into action my machine would shut down. I prob could of gotten away with a 700 or so, but liked the idea of a nice buffer space, especially in case I wanted to put some extra stuff in down the line... which I ended up doing (the second capture card, and found an 8 series geforce to replace the little PCI 6 series I had in it).

The guy who said he had a 1250W, he probably doesn't need all of that. But like I said, you can really only guarantee probably 1000->1100 watts out of that.

Furthermore keep in mind that the value we keep referencing is a vague representation of the consumption created by the PSU across all the rails. So maybe you need more on the the 5v rail because you have a large quantity of hard drives, and the only way to accomplish it is to buy a larger PSU that gives you a longer 5v rail, or another 5v rail at your disposal.

yes that`s what i say if you want to be over protected you need 1000W PSU max

EDIT: @ lordofduct come to think of it your 850W PSU will not do you any good for your current spec lets sum it you have 2xGeForce 8600+ GPU that is 2x400W =800W
you CPU need 130W max + 800W from your GPUs = 930W and you still have sound and HDD even small consume that they have your still 100W below you need :D

when you need 1000w, and actually need it. There's not a huge leap to 1250. Is it grossly power consuming? Yes. But is it that hugely different? No. That's like saying:

Your Ford gets 9 miles to the gallon, dude... you should drive a Chevy, we get 10 miles to the gallon. You'll never use that extra 250 lbs of load your truck supports.

You both get crap mileage.

Well I first tried a 1000W PSU on my computer, and one of my graphics cards kept popping up dialog boxes saying I didn't have enough power, and I needed to upgrade my PSU. I put a 1250 one in, and it miraculously worked.
There is a difference - the difference in being able to use 2 displays and being able to use 4 displays. I was running two GTX 480s (and I still am).

Your comparison with cars is not one which counts for much here, as with cars, you can still carry four people no matter how many miles per gallon you can go at. However, with a computer, if you have a 1000W PSU, you might not be able to run multiple graphics cards at all.

I referenced a pick up truck. Where load capacity of the bed is important. You ever here the phrase a "1 ton truck", that doesn't mean it weighs 2000 lbs, it means that it can haul 2000 lbs in the bed.

So the correlation is pretty spot on. If you have two trucks one can haul 1 ton and the other 1 ton and 250 lbs, and you usually need a little more than 1 ton, you better haul at 1 ton 250 giving you the buffer space you need.

You're grossly over estimating the requirements of a videocard. The 9800 suggests a minimum of a 400w psu for your system (meaning that assumes you are using power for a mobo, cpu, hdd, and cd-rom). Furthermore the 8 series card I have requires far less then that, it's nothing special...

With those gross over-calculations though a 1250 would sound even more necessary.

Laptops are better for me when it comes to work. Since I can move about and also get the work done.

5 years ago it would have been desktop hands down (unless you really needed the portability). But now laptops are just as high performance, don't overheat as badly (as long as it's not wrapped in a blanket), and the prices are almost identical to desktops. A docking station or even just nicely placed devices can give you the desktop feel.

I vote laptop. These days it doesn't make sense not to have one. I don't do graphics-intensive things on my machine, so I don't need the beefy video card. Memory can be added, a 2.5" internal drive can be more than I will ever need as well.

I was a longtime desktop user, but voted laptop largely due to portability. My desktop has some hardware customization to it, but I like being able to take my computer with me.

I hope this doesn't count as a necropost; I was going to create a topic similar to this but found the search bar resourceful.

On a topic from 2008 and last posted 2011? Yeah, that would be necroposting.
