OFFICIAL 2008 Back to School Thread

Post icon  Posted 04 August 2008 - 02:47 PM

For those students in the audience, it's about that time again. What classes are you taking? What degree program are you in?

Share your questions about classes and past experiences and we'll try our best to answer them. And feel free to share your own experiences. Is C++ still the preferred language being taught in schools, or have most moved to Java. Anyone taking .NET classes this year? Is anyone teaching Agile development these days?

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

Does Website Design count as a class? :D

Yeah, sadly I haven't hit college, so I'll be stuck learning the proper use of cell padding in HTML tables. The good news is that I can finish my work in about 20 minutes, leaving me with more than an hour's time to play some Halo with my friends on the LAN.

I'm in middle school, and this will be my last year there.

Not at all looking forward to going back. This summer went by way to fast.

Most of the intro classes are in java. This semester I'm taking C++, software engi, object oriented and calc classes. Although I am self taught on C/C++, I felt it was necessary to do an "official" semester of it for later on down the road.

Good call. I have learned programming on my own earlier in life and went to a class thinking I knew a lot about it and learned a lot more about the "theory" behind the syntax. They don't just teach you how to write a program but the problem solving methodology that will help you a lot in the industry.

Hello All,

You mean People get a break during the summer...

Let's see...

CISP 457 - Systems Analysis & Design
CISP 440 - Discrete Structures

Took the 430 class last semester and it was all C++ with basic data structures. Haven't taken these Professors before but they'll probably be C++ too.

JW

At the end of the year I will be qualified with Certificate II in I.T (for those that don't know what this qualification is, it is basically a qualification that says you can do stuff with a computer (technically competent, but not network administrator competent)). I wanted to do Cert III, but I couldn't at my age.

Hopefully next year I will be doing Software Development as a part of my VCE studies (VCE is a victorian high school certificate thing), a year ahead of when I should be doing it; however I have a funny suspicion I won't learn much from it (we will be using VB.NET if it's done at our school). I do know my teacher will be teaching things like Gantt charts etc, all things I need to learn about.

This semester is going to be challenging, but I have to say that I am looking forward to it, I will be taking
CSC 413 --->>> Software Develpment
We will create a interpreter using Java, in an eclipse environment
and
CSC 310 --->>> Assembly Language programming
Data representation. Assembly language programming. Subroutine linkage. Machine language encoding. Interrupt/exception handling. CPU datapath and control design.

In ALL of my classes we have used C++, so finally I get to learn Assembly and Java.

So if any of you have any tips when you guys got to build an interpreter I will be happy to hear them :^: :^: :^: :^:

I'm currently studying under twinning program. going to complete my Electric Electronic Engineering course next year, and probably going to further my studies in Japan in degree of Information System after that.

I took classes of Basic Information Processing last year, where the lecturer teach us C. he said he wanted to teach C++, but since the class was mixed with Mechanical Engineering student too, he chose to teach C. I have no programming classes this semester, going to take Advance Information Processing next semester. if I'm not wrong the syllabus is about data structure and algorithm.

after I learned C last year, I self taught myself to program in C++. I don't have any major problem moving from C to C++ before, so even if next year syllabus still being taught in C, I don't see it as major problem. :)

although it's not yet decided, I think I'm going to take classes of Natural Language Processing next year in Japan, and it's in Lisp. going to be interesting ;)

Freshman, CSC major at Suny Brockport!

I guess I don't get to actually take CSC courses this year though, I'm exempt from the first 2-3 I guess.

Which means... woohoo lots of Calc classes!
