Hi all,
I have been working for awhile at the Library at my school (Northwest Missouri State University) as a sort of student worker, I am currently writing a program for the librarians, but I also do some graphic design and what not. Anyway, I have never been given a deadline, or a time frame for completion of any projects, and a basically make up most of my own work as I see things that need to be done, or if I see a way something could be done more easily with a little help from a program.
Why I am asking is this: I know that my current work environment is not the normal work environment, I want to know what, those of you who have jobs in programming/web design etc..., your jobs are like. Are they stressful? Time consuming, do you have to spend a lot of time at work? What are your bosses like? If you would like, so I can get a good idea, let me know where your work (country, state (if in US), company).
I just really want to know what to expect after I graduate next Spring, and possibly which area of work to go into, as I have a fairly general major and a decent capacity to learn quickly, I could probably go into several different areas of my major, which by title is Interactive Digital Media (Comp Sci, and Visual Imaging), with a couple of minors. Thanks for any feedback I might get!

They treat us like mushrooms.
keep us in the dark and feed us nothing but shit. But they pay me good amounts of money to screw around on the internet.
It is about as fulfilling as a enema

Aside from the enema part, my job is nice. I fix what others can't, and maintain what is already there. I am in the US, and work for an insurance company in Baltimore. I am also training for a Systems Admin posistion to attach to my current PC Services Consultant position, but like Thorian said, "They treat us like mushrooms"!

Crap!!! Are you like me, bored out of your mind at work....wait a sec, I know you were laid off a while back, did you ever find a job? Now I'm looking at Java tutorials and snippets since I will be taking 10 weeks of java programming in school starting in 2 weeks. School full-time, married full-time, working full-time, and now with a baby on the way...looks like I have a ton on my plate!

I seem to be the only person that enjoys my job, lol.
I'm currently heading up the interactive & creative teams for my company (new job - was a senior texture artist / general designer / web programmer @ the last place) which is always keeping me on my toes, and facing new challenges.
I always have deadlines, reviews, seminars and stuff like that but it keeps you pushing that 10% more than you would if left to your own devices. It depends on your character but I think having a 'Dragon figure' breathing down your neck is a good thing. A boss that doesn't understand anything about what you do, but demands that you do it 2 days quicker than what you evaluated... the (~@!beep#@;!)
Also I think being a hybrid of any sort is a good way of staying fresh, no matter how vast the varient in skill. e.g. I design and develop which means when I'm getting bored of coding i simply open Photoshop or Maya and get the design work out of the way, and vice-versa.

Don't expect your first job out of college to be fulfilling, and in the unlikely event that it is, you can be pleasantly surprised.
