Can I develop a time machine and skip to week 156? Or how about the remote thing from Click? That sounds nice...

It just sounds like a really good challenge. Alot of work though, should be worth it right?

Even if you fail at making the MMO, if you have the will and the drive to keep it going for an extended period of time, you'll at least come away from the project with an extensively built up knowledge base for what is actually required to build a game of that magnitude. I'd consider that gained knowledge a successful venture, even if no game ever comes out of the project.

I totally agree with that!

Making a full-scale MMO isn't even a task for the hobbyist IMO, unless they have a particularly talented team with a broad skill set. Don't tackle MMOs now.

Recently stumbled upon this topic and I agree with everyone here, about it being a hassle to do.
Beginners should use BYOND to create their first MMO if they really want to do it. I imagine that it's easier to do it that way rather then doing the server stuff from scratch with C++ or JAVA or Linux, etc
I used that to create my fist MMO and it was easier than I thought it would be (but it still took me about two years). After using that then I guess they'd go on to use an actual language like C++ or java.
Also, if somoene would want to create an MMO wouldn't they try to make an offline, singleplayer RPG game first then move on to MMOs?
I'm just saying, if you can't make a good offline game, wouldn't it be harder to make one for everyone playing at one time...?

I think that create a mmo from scratch is a waste of time

Visual Basic can easily do the job. It's a programming language.
Any program or game written in C, C++, Visual C++ can also
be written in Visual Basic.
How do I know? Because I can do it.

Actually, no. Writing a game isn't just about having the core logic there that constitutes a game, it also comes down to game performance; taking an extreme example, there is no way that you are going to be able to write Black Ops to run smoothly in VB - it just won't be enjoyable, muchless even remotely playable.
