Javascript and Java may sound similar, but are largly different. I think Java would be a good option if you were going to make it. Though you would need to get a Sun approved cert because you need it to access files from the users computer (e.g the files made by the word prossesor).

right so i did not know what jsp was so i thought i would find out, and from my understanding, it is just a way to put a java program into a html page??? is this right??? so if i made a word processor (i will actually probably just start with a simple text editor, one step at a time) then i could use jsp and i would have an online word processor???

JSP is used to make Java Web Pages (so you don't need it to make the word prossesor), but you can make a Java program, archive it in a JAR and put it in a HTML code as an applet. But to do this, the user must have the Java Runtime Envirment.
The best thing to do is to get a book that covers Java programming and Java web development.
Here is a link if you want to know more about applets:
http://java.sun.com/applets/
Here is a link to the certificate:
http://www.sun.com/t.../java/index.xml
