They wanted someone with 8 years Linux experience & they didn't like that I had a mix of Unix, Linux, & Windows.
So they put together a team of four specialists whom I'd be working with to "Drill" me with questions. I think their aim was to either make me look stupid, or to scare me out of the position. To the contrary, I got every single question correct. Even one that they said plagued them for weeks. After a few days I got a response. "Well, we still really want someone with 8 years Linux only experience"... if I passed every question, passed every test that you set before me to prove I'm 8 years qualified, & did all that you asked & expected of a qualified candidate & it still wasn't good enough, THEN WHY THE F*CK WOULD YOU HAVE AN INTERVIEW WHEN I ALREADY DIDN'T MEET A PREREQUISITE? I mean, seriously, wtf is wrong with you people? If no is the ONLY option, then why drag it out further? I don't care that you waisted your own stupid time, but jeez.
Yes, interviews can be trying.

A desktop machine, no network connectivity, cannot resolve domain names, cannot reach dns, ultimately cannot reach any other node on the network, yet it responds to pings from any other machine.

No, as far as the workstation in question, it cannot communicate in anyway to any node on the network. However any other node is getting a response when they ping it's ip address.

They probably found someone who answered all questions correctly AND who had the 8 years of Linux experience they wanted. As someone who has conducted interviews before, I can tell you that it's an inconvenience to be pulled away from your work to do it, so unless I was always really up front if I did not like a candidate. Unfortunately for the candidate, the hiring manager will often interview them, even if they do not quite fit the criteria in the hopes that someone who is a better fit will come along. It sucks to be in the position.
In general I don't dislike interviews. In fact, many times I have enjoyed them because I was in a position of power (did not need the job) and went in knowing that I was also interviewing THEM. They had to measure up to MY expectations. There have been cases where the recruiter or the company misrepresented the job, but I typically figured that out fairly quickly and, in some cases, cut the interview short so as not to waste any more of my time or theirs.

Maybe your experience is more than 8 years, but they need only 8 years. So you weren't accepted.
