Smartboards

Posted 18 September 2008 - 09:44 PM

This summer almost all the classrooms in my school were equipped a smartboard.

They are extremely fun. We have not done anything truly productive with them yet, except Text Twists. It seems chalkboards may go extinct before polar bears.

Discuss?

We had these things installed in my old school about 4 years ago. They're pretty cool, but a little distracting~ we used to hijack it and the teacher would just get frustrated that no one was doing any work, we were all just doing wordsearches.

I miss school :(

I guess we'd better get moving on that mass polar bear cull!

They waste money on these things instead of paying more for better teachers? Teachers already don't get paid enough and something like this is so unnecessary. I'm sure they cost a boat load too.

They are neat looking though.

Didn't 20/20 do a report on this, and find that statement to be inaccurate?

Smartboards do cost a good chunk of change. The Air Force uses those in classrooms and conference rooms all over. I fortunately got to play around with a few and I really do enjoy them. I was even helping a non-programmer design some forms in Access. (I know, I know Access and VBA suck. I agree, but I'm not here to debate that.) They are fun to play with, but I am more looking towards multi-touch systems like the Microsoft Surface (which isn't that great and crashed twice during the demo I saw) and Lockheed Martin's multi-touch system. That one is much better as it requires less hardware, can be tiled to be any size you want, and has better response time. Only down side is it doesn't have the RFID reader that the Surface does.

For the average home user however, all of these systems are to expensive. So I have been looking into the TouchKit system (made by the same people who make Cubit) and DIY versions.

I think I spend WAY to much time on Engadget and Makezine.

they make more elsewhere? i know in my area, new york state, the make garbage. requires a masters degree and they start you off around 38000. thats just ridiculous. (high school teacher). what do they make in other countries? and do they all require such an education?

smartboards sound awesome to me. i wish my college had them. at least they havent had them in the classrooms i have been in. I'm sure there are some class rooms that have them. but they have got to be pretty expensive

in Canada you can survive off teachers pay it is more I'm not sure though according to ontario teachers it's $36 000 - >$ 80 000 but it takes a long time to get the highest but that's just in my province I dunno about the others.

In the states though it is far less. My mom was a teacher for many many years as is my girlfriend. It is not a lucrative profession here.

i've used smart boards on a couple different occasions, i always found them too unwieldy and inaccurate to be of any actual use or benefit. maybe in a couple product generations.

At my school they're obsessed with putting smartboards everywhere...

[rant]
They are the most annoying things ever, half the teachers don't know how to use their computer let alone a projector and a smartboard!

The ink line (which is always really thick) is never synchronised to the pen touch so everything is really inaccurate.

The board is to sensitive so any line drawn is very wobbly.

And finally, they always run the software on slow machines so you spend half the time waiting for it to catch up on what you have drawn!

there was a smartboard in my art class it worked out pretty well, the teacher knew how to use it and it helped and made the history part of art more interesting
