Found this while recently slashdotting; I don't really see what was so great from the sample conversation in the photo, it seemed quite similar to some of the other bots I had seen on MSN.

Machine take on man at mass Turing Test

Do you reckon the Turing Test should be scrapped? He wasn't far off with his prediction seeing as apparently this bot fooled the judges.

I think it would be great if I could just tell my operating system what to do in plain English, but then it would take the fun out of programming. I wonder if people will be intimidated by machines that are able to speak fluently?

It's called speech recognition. We're not far off...kinda scary.

My computer has Windows Speech Recognition, and I use it to write papers and stuff.

And yes I would be intimidated.

I meant that it talks back to you like a human, it was easier to just turn speech into words, but the machine has to then interpret those words and then reply quickly.

@WolfCoder, True, it is easier to just interpret and output than to output something more complex than text.

I fool people when I play games all the time. They think I'm a "Dueling bot."
Due to the precision and fast-responses.

"AI" isn't that fascinating -- Haven't you ever played or even heard of "RUDE DOS?"
Anything can reply based on X words in a sentence. It's like teaching a computer math, it's old news.

I actually have never been terribly impressed with the Turing Test. However I think it is very interesting that a computer has even come this close.


@Hyper -- Actually complex chat programs are very interesting. Computers have a very hard time with context and implication. Because of this they tend to have conversations that are rather like talking to an idiot or a madman.

Some programs work from a database of sentences. A more sophisticated one actually generates sentences based upon grammar rules. These ones can be fun because they can be recursive and seem to hold a conversation with you. -- But neither of these two really work with meaning.

The second can provide a basic model to work with meaning. There are a number of different approaches to meaning. some work by simple word association and others work with complex weighted graphs.

i.e. if you are interested in computer science speech AI is really a terribly interesting area.
