Listen to all this rubbish from the UK government: they feel it is a necessity to log and store all emails sent every day.

I wonder how they plan on monitoring which ones are British, or how they plan on storing the Billions of emails sent everday?

Most people who have anything worth reading will encrypt it anyway so in the end, there's no point in what they're doing except to annoy the public.

I'm sure they store them anyway at the moment...just illegally so they want to legalise asap.

I think they only want to store a record of which websites have been accessed.
All the same, I am sure "they" would love to keep all our mail and scan it for words they don't care for.

This already happens at some mail servers. There was one of a hospital, whose mails about a seminar on spastic symptoms after strokes were not getting through, because some idiot had decided that spastic is a rude word. Conferences on breast cancer and so are having similar problems. (That infantile jerk who sends me Viagra ads every day likes to write s*x so it gets through our firewall. One day I will find that guy and explain forcibly that people called Sonja do not need Viagra, and even if they did they would not buy it anonymously on the Internet.)

But I gather the interesting people use codewords or cryptography anyway. Well, they would, wouldn't they? I installed PGP once, but I never had anything worth coding, so I never used it. How sad.

Whatever happens, they gather more and more data about us every year - what on earth do they do with it all? Where do they keep it, and how do they scan such vast amounts of data?

You do realize that emails are in the public domain right? So before your government said they would store them, anyone could see it? Why is this so hard for people to understand?

Just because you sign and seal a letter with that sticky crap you licked with your tongue doesn't mean someone might not open your letter.

Yeah, of course emails are in the public domain - yet I am yet to meet anyone sad enough to want to sift through millions of gigabytes of data everday to read them?

This system will introduce even stricter and more threatening Deep packet inspection? They will start working with other groups such as RIAA and, as mentioned before, the cops.

Instead of sifting through Terabytes of data why not flag keywords by using a string search?

It's not cost effective to linearly search through all that data. They'd have to data mine for whatever they are looking for. Go 24!

They're planning to sift through every piece of data during transmission before it is passed on?

My ISP can barely provide 500kb/s on the routers they're using atm so I don't know how they plan to centralise the whole of the UK's internet that is siftible and realtime.

man set up two or more e-mail accounts and set them to spam each other with mails consisting soley of "hot" words like "bomb" "Jihad" "gun" "Paris Hilton" etc
keep their servers busy
