Cisco's Competition -> "Think Inside The Box"

Post icon  Posted 31 October 2008 - 04:58 PM

Anyone entering it?

It's a competition for programmers (obviously) to compete in order to win a $100,000 prize.

The contest is for programs written in C, Java, or Perl on top of Cisco’s ISR router.

Quote

Cisco is inviting application developers who "think outside the box", to innovate and promote the concept of the network as a platform. This is your opportunity to build exciting Linux based applications on the Cisco Application Extension Platform (AXP), and win a share of the total prize pool valued at US $100,000.

Apparently it's open to individuals or teams, so is anyone interested in forming a team?
I think a limit of 5-10 members sounds fair, but it's entirely open. Maybe even a few DIC teams?
DIC Staff Vs DIC Experts? ;)

Discuss.

EDIT: Just inquired about the languages that are allowed, and I got a really quick response:

Quote

"Embedded Linux environment supporting the execution of applications written in the following programming languages: Java, C (native), Perl (interpreted), Python (interpreted), and Bash (interpreted).

"Native and interpreted applications written in other programming languages can be integrated by the third party application if the third party application uses additional support libraries and interpreters."

Maybe I'm just being blind but I cannot actually find anything representing API documentation, samples, tutorials or anything to help you learn how to program for AXP. I'm not a registered user, which might have something to do with it, but you'd think they'd let me figure out what I can actually do with AXP.

You're right, it's not the easiest thing to find, is it?

After some searching, (Google FTW!) I found this: AXP SDK
I'll be downloading it tomorrow and playing about with it.

:)

I got an email about the competition but I don't know how they got my email address (unless DIC sent it).

It appears Cisco is watching us. We really should form a team and enter.

IF I enter, I'm up for forming a team, though it says it's all Linux based and I've never done anything Linux based~ That said, I pick stuff up real easy.

I'll be working in C if anyone wants to team. :)

I'm used to using linux, and can test stuff easily. I can also use C, Java, perl and even bash to a limited extent.

I think once you register you can download the developer guide which provides information on AXP API(s), they also have a Vmware version of the hardware which can be used for basic understanding of the platform.

I'm probably interested in working on a team if anyone wants to make a perl solution.
