Client/Server Applications: Does C++ use winsock?

Posted 05 November 2008 - 10:53 AM

Been trying to learn how to create an online game, but want to start small.

A simple "Connection Successful" to a server application and client application would be awesome.

From there I would like to do simple chat. 2 clients connected, one chats. The other sees it. Vice versa.

Only from this point can you successfully work on a game. What most people here don't realize when they spew out "I wanna make an MMO a durrrrrrr" is that making a good SINGLE player game is difficult and so is fully understanding online connectivity and the way it works (client/server) and that these must be understood before delving into the realms of online games.

I have the correct mindset and I hope you all see this.

Please let me know what exactly I should be "Googling" so I can start working on something like this!

Damn..

Beej's guide focuses on linux/unix and he says that Windows uses winsock. So I guess I should look up winsock then .. =/

THIS is the kind of information I wanted to know, modi123_1. If you wanted to help me out, you would could have just said "winsock" or "xxxx" instead of posting a google search that has me run in circles for an hour.

Or you could have rubbed a couple of brain cells together and figured out how to search Google on your own.

What is your ****** deal? I said I have been googling, and have been running around in circles.

I spent 45 minutes reading a tutorial before realizing it was not for windows applications and that I need to learn winsock, and now im trying to find a decent winsock tutorial that explains THE BASICS, which I can't.

I didn't ask you to come in here and flame me. Im just looking for someone who can recommend something THEY USED ONCE.

*You* insulted modi, I responded in kind (not that he needed my help).

So you mean to tell me that typing the words "winsock tutorial" into Google gave you no relevant links?

Can you get some freakin reading comprehension?

I never said there were no links. I said Ive been going around in circles because no one has said YES, WINSOCK IS WHAT YOU WANT.

Look at my freaking topic title.

"Does C++ use winsock?"

Even a simple yes/no answer would have put me on the right track.

You need to leave this forum if you are not willing to share ideas and help people.
