Do you freelance? Want to?

Post icon  Posted 18 November 2008 - 05:41 PM

I'm in the process of working out a partnership with a popular freelance website and I'm curious how many of you are currently freelancing? Have you used online freelance sites to find work/clients? Would you be interested in seeing freelance opportunities on DIC?

For those of you who don't currently freelance, do you want to and just don't know where to start? Would a forum dedicated to freelancing help if you could talk about freelancing with other freelancers?

Talk to me people! We're talking about making $$$ here!

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

I've never freelanced, but the prospect would be quite appealing. I'm all for a discussion place. Would DIC be a freelance host of some nature?

I have done freelance, but not for programming. I have just fixed computers, and would love to get more business for that. I would love to get some requests for SQL, HTML and CSS help.

I've done freelancing before, but it was more or less a failed attempt at money. The sites I used had very few relevant subjects, and when I finally found a job, the owners never responded. I'd definitely be interested in freelancing via DIC.

What service were you using? Whatever we end up doing, it'll be in partnership with an existing service, so I want to make sure we are partnering with the right service.

getacoder.com was the first site I tried. I got a great project done, but I'm like 8 dollars short of cashing out. I check back occasionally, but theres nothing of interest. DigitalPoint was the second site. Its basically just a forum where people request stuff and people respond.

The DP solution seemed to work better. As soon as you finish the project, you get it sent right to you, without the site middleman-ing.

My freelancing career was crappy.

Like other well-known freelnacing sites, the one I used had a sort of bidding feature, where programmers would bid for jobs. The minimum bid was $5 bucks, because you had to pay a $5 fee to use the service.

Anyway, I bid on PHP coding projects (image gallerys, admin control panels, etc.) usually at $40 or $50 bucks. I wasn't looking to cash in big, just to make a little bit of cash doing something I like while still in school. But I end up getting out-bidded by big website design companies willing to do the job for $5 (essentially, free) just to get a good review from the customer.

I realized I'd have to bid lower and lower. Soon I was begging to do some PHP projects for as low as $15 bucks. But it was the same. I would get out-bid by big out-sourced companies who just auto-bid on every new project that comes in the site.

I only got one job, and that was making a database of emails for $10 bucks. Since the website's finder's fee is $5, I only got to keep $5.

So yeah, my experience isn't good. But if we can get something arranged with another freelancing site, I'd be willing to try again.

I never freelanced before, tried contracting a bit. I would be willing to look into this, and definitely would like to see a forum dedicated to discussion

Only used a freelancing site once. GetAFreelancer. Got scammed out of $350, although I was on the buying side, not the coding side.

Ended up getting a full refund through paypal after a painful month.

Let me reiterate something. I absolutely will not be interested if this involves MyTino or any of there affiliates for reasons that I hope are obvious.

Agree. Only dealing with legitimate companies who I would personally do business with.

I look for PayPal jobs on Rent A Coder almost weekly. I usually do a few per year. I used to do larger jobs before my friend quit working with me.

Currently I'm trying to land some retail space & move out of the office. :^: It's sort of crummy to bring customers in & see laptop parts strewn all around.

I've tried freelancing one time, but my employer never sent me any more messages after my first task. But I'd really be interested. Not in programming, but more in writing, editing, and similar tasks.
