I can't believe no one here has yet mentioned the one place to find relatively unbiased news, has little celebrity news unless it's fairly big (though I can't always be sure of this), is very up-to-date, and when it says breaking, it REALLY means breaking:

Drudge Report!

It's not the most eye-pleasing (but then, I like the black-and-white, no-mess, simplistic style), but it's simply the best way to get the literal news of the hour without all the flashy distractions.

Might be mentioned that 99% of his links don't go to his own articles, they go to other news websites where the articles is, and doesn't discriminate based on sources. If it's something he gets to break very first (like he did with the Monica Lewinsky scandal), it'll be in a little memo describing what it is about, and usually the headline.

It's my first, albeit not only, stop for the news.

First off, great topic.

Here's what I recommend:
1. BBC (my primary and my homepage)
2. NPR
3. Democracy Now
4. Al-Jazeera
5. The New York Times
6. The Washington Post
7. 60 Minutes
8. The Economist (jesus christ they are good.... so good)
9. CNN
10. Foreign Affairs
11. Foreign Exchange with Fareed Zakaria
12. The News Hour with Jim Leher
13. Bill Moyers Journal
14. Congressional Quarterly (this is what Senators and Congressmen use to stay up to date with Washington Politics... dead serious)
15. C-SPAN
16. All Things Considered
17. Counterspin
18. Gallup Polls (not headlines, but good for seeing public opinion)
19. Politico.com
20. The Guardian

There are so many good sources... Newsweek, Charlie Rose, Time, Reuters, the Associated Press, and about a thousand others. I think the cable news guys (Anderson Cooper, Keith Oberman, Larry King, Bill O'Reily, etc) can be amusing, but are useless for getting straight information. If you want the straight news and no bs go to public television/radio... PBS, and whatever public radio station you have in your area. Avoid local news whenever possible if you are looking for national or international news... it's obviously not their focus.

Yea, there is a lot of good news out there... just give these a try.

One useful thing you could do is to seek out governmental bodies or international organizations, and get on their emailing lists. For a while I was on the lists for the State Department, Homeland Security, The British Parliament, the US House of Representatives, and a hundred others... but then you get like 100 news emails a day. So... just some ideas.

A long time ago I developed a site that had a section called Newslink. It basically had links to every media source I could find. Well over 200. There are tons of news sources out there, I definitely want a great start page.

I think with all this information provided I will go ahead with my plan of creating my own home page by incorporating RSS & Javascript feeds to where I can filter out the stories I want and don't want to an extent, and I can also take advantages of several different sources.

This thread turned out good.

Thanks everyone.

Me and the professor I work for use BBC. I should set it as my home page instead of the default FireFox-flavored Google search page. Typically anything banned in China with articles you care about is generally a great read as long as you keep bias in mind.

That article about how video game systems eat power is retarded >.<"
Our refrigerator, dishwasher, cars, TVs and whatnot use way more power than anything else in the house. It looks like someone from Nintendo paid a guy to appeal to green fanatics with mental disabilities.

I don't use iGoogle for the same reason, only it does not log me out, it's the need to log in that tires me... :pirate:

Back when I lived in the Houston area I used KHOU 13 and KTRP 11 for my news sources. They had the same general bias as I do (conservitive/libertarian) and I could easily supliment that with national news, which tends to lean more twoards the left in my personal oppinion. The wonderful thing was they actually had stories I cared about.

Now, though, I don't really have a news source. I end up going between DrudgeReport and CNN most of the time, but I could defenatly do without the CNN style commentary and showboating. (Holograms... seriously. I don't care how cool the tech may be because the fact of the matter is that was pointless!)

I need to find a few more sources for my news. I'm thinking about going back to BBC or subscribing to my local newspaper. But that's what I generally do.

I really do like this idea. It shows the consiquences of an action and that security's keeping an eye out for thieves at the same time. The fact that it isn't preachy or cheesy is also a bonus. Stuff like this sould be used more often.
