Failing Economy and the IT Sector

Post icon  Posted 20 November 2008 - 04:07 PM

The point of this poll is to see if an economic downturn would effect the IT industry and how much, and more speciffically which which areas of expertise. Many of us know the economy sucks dow closed around 7500 today. So take the poll and we'll see whats going on out their in the IT world economy. If you know of anything good to add on to this just post it.

Thanks,
Musya

S & P hit an 11 year low as well. IT sectors that involve failing industries will be affected, but on the whole (and this has been discussed a lot here) it will not be a bad career field to be in. Economy may be going to shit, but people still need information management, etc...

So far this year (through October) I have doubled last years income finacially. Since most of my work is Laptop & iPod repair, I selected the hardware. But our shop basically handles everything on that list except for the Graphics & Multimedia.

I was actually thinking on my drive home tonight about how the economy might directly effect my business in '09, being that we cater to emergency situations (Spidered LCD screen, Viruses) for both home & business computing. It should be interesting & I hope to continue to push business further in '09.

Well, all the votes so far have said "Flat/Steady" or "Increased Heavily", which is what I would expect.

Whereas during a downturn people would love the cut the IT budget, it is just as crucial as any other time. Probably the only area that could be cut at all is software development/improvements, but most managers and C*O's are smart enough these days to realise that they would be shooting themselves in the foot for when the market picks back up if they did that.

For those few who aren't aware, I make my cash as a web developer. My company's contract load seems to be on a constant increase - while my boss believes it is nothing more than existing clients "spreading the word", I've seen an enormous increase in the number of e-commerce sites coming in.... I think it is a last ditch effort by a lot of small businesses to keep their heads above water. I could be wrong, I hope I'm wrong..... but only time will tell.

I really hope not, since I'll be graduating in May...and of course, for the sake of everyone else out there! I've seen a couple of newscasts lately that say the technology and medical fields shouldn't be too affected, though.

The medical field will almost never be effected, software and web dev is what im worried about, as well as media. it will however be in need for basic demands, accounting, government etc. but creating personal software might decrease and i agree most businesses are trying a last attempt to get business by advertising on the web and what not.

The outsourcing industry will definitely suffer. But I doubt about the other parts of IT industry. IT is like a very important part of business now. It can't be ignored or anything anymore.
