Who is your favorite author?

Posted 22 November 2008 - 02:41 PM

Edgar Allan Poe is one of the best, I think. He was very clever and could make the story interesting. Some of the ones I like best are:

The Cask of Amontillado. Obviously the narrator of that story is nuts, but we don't quite realize it at first. You kind of sympathize with the guy at first. Then when you realize what he's up to, and how he lies all through the story, you think maybe the poor victim Fortunato did not do anything to him, and he's just nuts. It's kind of creepy, but very well told.

I also like The Tell Tale Heart. The guy's guilt over having murdered someone and hidden the body drives him nuts. This is another story that you don't really see the whole picture at first.

Maybe I just like reading about crazy people. lol. (The Yellow Wallpaper is really good, too, although not written by Poe)

Here's some info about Poe if you're interested:

Dean Koontz. One of the only authors whose books I can sit down and actually read the entire thing from cover to cover.

There are too many to narrow it down to one but I will big up Terry Pratchett and Jeff Noon.

Right now, probably Neil Gaiman.

Also, Charles de Lint, Neal Stephenson, Walter Jon Williams, Connie Willis, Sherri Tepper... Um, there are lots. If I made a big list, I'd forget some.

For classics, Poe is brilliant. He's often called the father of the modern short story. I find anything written more than half a century ago sounds staid to modern ears. I enjoyed reading Tolkien, but it certainly has a quality to it. Edgar Rice Burroughs is fun light reading, but you know it was written some time ago; there's a feel. Also, older stories have a weird sense of "climax" and you're often left with a feeling of "what's the point."

I haven't read a book for nigh on a year but my favorite author is Douglas Adams.
Favorite Book though is "Mnemosyne's Kiss" by Peter J. Evans

I now tend to listen to Audio books and dramatizations.
"Something Wicked This Way Comes" for drive home at night.
The Entire radio series of The HitchHikers's Guide to the Galaxy on a single CD.
Currently Listening to The Sentient Advantage by Chris Pugmire

That show was terrible excluding some 5 or 6 episodes.

And THIS is the one I was talking about...

Posted Image

He's a serial killer that works for the cops as a Blood-Spatter Analyst...but he only kills bad people.

gabehabe's to-watch list:
The Max Payne Movie
Dexter - nope.
Dexter's Laboratory
Johnny Bravo.

Back to the subject matter.

Books. I don't read a lot, so it's hard for me to say a favourite author [other than the point I already mentioned]

2 books I love:
  • Tick Tock by Dean Koontz
  • The Sett by Ranulph Fiennes [true story, fucking crazy]

Ever heard of Robert A. Salvatore? He has got to be one of the best authors I have ever read. (The entire Dark Elf series Featuring Drizz't Do'Urden, I've read them all)

Second on that list is David Eddings (The Belgariad, The Mallorean, The Elenium, The Tamuli)

Third would have to he the newcomer, Christopher Paolini. The Inheritence Series is freakin' awesome! :^:
