People people, who is putting all these new programmers up to creating an anti-virus software because I'd like to meet them and try to explain how large of a project this really is.

Creating an anti-virus software is far more work than the people asking could even imagine, and I would be willing to bet that at least 99% of new programmers who venture down this road will either fail or not even complete it.

So new programmers, get an anti-virus application out of your head, start with something far more simple. For project ideas check out Martyr2’s Mega Project List, there's projects for beginners and for the more advanced programmers alike

It's possible but it's still a very bad idea. First of all, the VB.Net language wasn't meant for making anti-viruses, it depends on the .Net Framework and viruses would be able to somewhat easily bypass and avoid the program. Second of all, it's also a bad idea to make an anti-virus by yourself, new viruses come out everyday and anti-virus software needs to be constantly updated to make sure it can catch the more recent viruses. Not only that but the programmers who make anti-virus software are usually alert to the new viruses coming out.

It is very good idea to make a Anti Virus. Well it is not a though project. It is easy project if U have patient, carzy ness to build it. Don't think negative. Always think positive. If a single IITian's could build it why can't we. Don't think that IITian's are superior then us. They are as same as we are only the thing that is difference is that they keeps on doing research until find the solution to the problem and we don't even think solving a simple problem after few attempt fails.

If U are building a project for academic purpose then it is a very perfect choice. There is no need to update the anti virus software with current virus signature. Load the database of anti virus with minimum virus information as possible U can find by Google search. If U are building Anti virus software for commercial purpose then it is something different but U will get help from the company or Ur team members.

I will suggest U have positive thinking. Do research, read books, search in internet, get information form forums etc if U r crazy to build an Anti Virus Software. Do something different then other. Building Information management system, school management system, screen saver etc are done by everyone. Do something different that make others shock, impressive.
It will also help for Ur future like company interview...
