i downloaded eclipse so i could start learning java, and i got this error message (picture below) any idea how to stop it?

I would try uninstalling the JSDK completely and reinstalling the latest one from sun's site. It probably has something to do with your Classpath not being set right.

i just restarted the comp and it worked. i got eclipse up and running, now i just need to figure out how the hell to write my code and compile it.

java is fairly easy, if you have programmed in other OOP languages. Just get a good book and go at it, I was up and running programs at work in no time!

I wouldn't bother with Eclipse just yet. If you're just learning Java, you don't want the added complexity of learning an IDE as well, which is what you'll be doing. So just go ahead and do it all in a text editor for now. Two books I would recommend for learning Java are Java How to Program by Deitel and Deitel, and [i]Thinking in Java[i] by Bruce Eckel. You can download it for free at one of these sites
