Well, I joined the project nText, and that's going well, but I want to try my own project out. Anyone have any ideas, or programs that they want but haven't been able to find? I might even be willing to do custom stuff. I just need some ideas. Help me!

Well, for me it s fun to code it
I know there are some opensource ons, but i thought it is good idea to get
some experience..
It was just an idea for you, of course i can make this on my own.. Maybe you like to do
a web based one or so..

I know there are some posts here about compiler's? those are always needed. I would like to see a really good open source game engine

I know of at least one good open source game engine. It's called irrlicht. You can find it on sourceforge. That and a compiler are both too advanced for me, sad to say.

Find something you use often, take the idea and make an incredably simple version of it, add to it and make it your own masterful creation (e.g MS Paint, NotePad, an alarm app, etc).

If you are a linux user, One project I have looked for without any luck is a MP3 player with the capability to announce the track artist and titles as they are played, like a DJ. This should keep you active for a week or two.
It might be helpful if you suppplied a little more information regarding your development platform of choice etc.
Hope you find something interesting to work on.

Good idea. My platform of choice is linux. I know Java best, but I want to get better at C/C++. And Carlton, Amarok gives you a nice little window that fades in and out that tells you what the artist and song is. Is that what you were talking about?
