With an inventory system you will need to keep track of your stock in a database, and use VB.NET to create a 'front-end' for this which will allow you to add to and subtract from your stock levels. You will also need the ability to create new items in your database for any new products that you might start stocking, as well as removing old items.

Hope this gives you an idea of where to start.
