Need help with COBOL

Posted 10 December 2008 - 05:44 PM

i need help in this program

Program 1
Write a program to create a sequential master file. The input file (input09-01.txt) is in the following format:

Positions Field
01 20 Student Name
21 29 Social Security Number
30 44 Street Address
45 59 City
60 61 State
62 66 Zip Code
67 68 Major Department
69 72 Year of Graduation

The new master file should be in the following order:
Social Security Number
Student Name
Major Department
Year of Graduation
Street Address
City
State
Zip Code

The records need to be sorted on Social Security Number. Check for the following validations:
Student Name Missing
Social Security Number Missing
Year of Graduation not numeric
Year of Graduation > 2005

Program 2
This program should update the master file created from program 1. Use transactions (trans08-01.txt) in the following formats:
Positions Field
01 Code 1 (Addition)
02 10 Social Security Number
11 30 Student Name
31 32 Major Department
33 36 Year of Graduation
37 51 Street Address
52 66 City
67 68 State
69 73 Zip Code

01 Code 2 (Student Name change)
02 10 Social Security Number
11 30 Student Name

01 Code 3 (Street Address change)
02 10 Social Security Number
11 25 Street Address

01 Code 4 (Major Department change)
02 10 Social Security Number
11 12 Major Department

01 Code 5 (Year of Graduation change)
02 10 Social Security Number
11 14 Year of Graduation

01 Code 6 (Delete record)
02 10 Social Security Number

This file needs to be sorted on Social Security Number. Have your program make all suitable validity checks on each transaction, and print a line on one of the output reports for each transaction. For any change to an existing master record, have your program print the Social Security Number and the contents of the changed field from the master record. For a record deleted from the master file, have your program print the Social Security Number, the Student Name, and the Year of Graduation from the master file. For a record that is added, have the program print the Social Security Number and the Student Name for the new student.

For all errors, print a message to an error file. Errors that could occur would be, add a record when a master exists, change a record that a master does not exist, delete a record that a master does not exist, duplicate transaction (these are not allowed).

It always helps to put forth an effort and then ask help. Show what you've done to solve the problem so we can help you better

What is your COBOL environment? What book(s) are you using?

I could definitely help you with this... I've taken 2 years of Advanced COBOL and 1 year of basic... but my only rule is (just like EVERYONE else's rule here):

If you don't make a decent effort to get SOMETHING done, or have specific questions about a certain piece of your code that doesn't work... NOBODY is going to help you.

I'll be watching this topic, so if you want to help yourself out (you are obviously taking a COBOL class) why would you want someone doing EVERYTHING for you?

Read the book, and atleast TRY to do SOMETHING... or you will never get anywhere with programming, and you should drop out now. Nobody is going to do your project for you.

If you want somebody to do your work for you, you are at the wrong website.

http://www.RentACoder.com -- You will find someone very easily to do your work for you on this website, because you aren't asking for it to be done for free.

Like I said, nobody is just going to do this for free... you have to make a decent effort to do it YOURSELF before asking "i not know hoe 2 do cobol so i needs someones to work and do things on my stuff for free for to me have it done soon!"

Sorry, but your best bet is RentACoder.com .

^ With that response, I'm going to say that when you figure out how to use Rent-A-Coder, I'll send you an auction request and do it for you. Although, you do need to be 18 and have a valid checking account... Do you have that? :D :genius:
