G1 is based on the Google Android platform. The developer's Android page is:
http://code.google.com/android/
The Android SDK is available at:
http://code.google.c...d/download.html
There is also a step-by-step guide on developing Android applications:
http://code.google.c...ntro/index.html
The software for Android is developed using Java (so you will have to learn it, if you don't know the Java language but want to develop applications for the G1). The guides provided are describing the usage of the SDK with the Eclipse IDE, however other Java IDEs (like NetBeans or IntelliJ) are also compatible.
If you want to publish your applications to Android Marketplace, you will have to register as a developer. The registration fee is $25. But that gives you an opportunity to get a unlocked G1 that can be modified by uploading different builds of Android, as well as Android applications.
