Be warned with UPS/FedEx email .... A new virus

Posted 12 December 2008 - 09:31 PM

Leave it to the wonderful virus writers of the world to release a virus at the time of year they know most will pass for it. The email says it
s from UPS or FedEx, stating that there was a problem delivering their package and a link to an invoice that they need to print out and bring in before they can get their package. Here is a sampling of one of the emails being sent

Quote

Dear Sir/Mam,

Unfortunately we were not able to deliver postal package you sent on July the 25 in time because the recipient's address is not correct.

Please print out the invoice copy attached and collect the package at our office.

Your FEDEX
www.fedex.com

This has been verified by both Snopes.Com and UrbanLegends.Com.

Please, please pass this along to all you know, we all do more and more online ordering each year and something like this can have horrible ramifications to the e-commerce world (simply because so many people are stupid enough to click the link)

Is it a drive by download once you click on the link or are people prompted for credit card information, etc...?

This is phishing or social engineering, but not a virus. :)

There's also one going around saying you've got an e-card. What better time for that than Christmas?

Slick; I'm surprised there haven't been more things like this in the past really.

No, clicking the link launches the virus

Dear Sir/Mam,
...

Dead Giveaway. I can't help but feel sorry for the people that get fooled by this.

We don't know if you are a man or woman, but rest assured, you are a valued customer of ours.

It's got to be in the top 5 ways of determining a phishing attack. If the email claims to be to an account holder/customer, then it should start with your 1st name.

I got this one the other day:

Quote

Dear Account User,
This Email is from Yahoo Account Services and we are sending it to every Yahoo Email User Accounts Owner for safety. we are having congestions due to the anonymous Registration of Yahoo Accounts so we are shutting down some Yahoo Accounts and Your Account was among those to be deleted.We are sending you this email to so that you can verify this Account.If you are still interested please confirm Your Account by filling the space below.Your Username,Password,Date of Birth and your Country information would be needed to verify Your Account.

Due to the congestion in all Yahoo users and removal of all used Yahoo Accounts, Yahoo would be shutting down some Yahoo Accounts, You will have to confirm your E-mail by filling out your Login Information below after clicking the reply button, or your Account will be suspended within 48 hours for security reasons.

* Yahoo ID: ....................
* Password: ....................
* Date of Birth: ...............
* Country Or Territory: ........

After following the instructions in the sheet, Your Account will not be interrupted and will continue as normal. Thanks for your attention to this request. We apologize for any inconveniences.

Warning!!! Account owner that refuses to update his/her Account after two weeks of receiving this warning will lose his or her Account Permanently.

Sincerely
Customer Care
Yahoo! Mail Service.

Besides the fact that Yahoo isn't going to ask you for your password, what gives this away is that they say they're sending it to everyone, and 'your account' has been chosen, but not all accounts are being closed. That makes no sense.

There have been a whole load of dodgy e-card emails over the years, most are just slight variations on the same thing. One did actually involve a legit site being ripped off if I remember rightly.

That's odd, I accidentally clicked on a link like that from a random IM message and it asked me where to save a program but it didn't do anything automatically. Of course I'm smart enough to not have downloads open automatically.
