Spamming in forums

Posted 16 December 2008 - 02:24 PM

This question goes out to Dream.In.Code moderators/admins and the like for other forums.

Apologies if this is the wrong category -- sorta debated whether I should put it here, the caffeine lounge or the PHP corner. I'm asking this question because I'm interested in setting up a message board system (phpbb, etc.) in a website I'm putting together. From personal experience, I have noticed almost no problems in spamming in forums I've visited. Is it relatively easy to keep it at bay? Be advised, this is different from flamers.

I know phpBB makes plugins to help deter forum spam, you might still get some but that's what moderation is for as well.

Captcha's and email verification is your friend.

not forum related but its amazing the amount of spam my site blocks via akismet (for wordpress) so I can only imagine the # of attempts that hit dreamincode daily.

I think you made the right choice putting it here.

We do get the occasional spam. Mostly kids at school, methinks. I've been a mod since July, and I've only seen a few cases of really bad spamming.

It's not too difficult to keep it under wraps. Remember, this site is huge, and we don't get too much spam. If you're just starting out, you shouldn't have a problem, at least for a while. :)

People won't spam if you don't have many members~ who would see it? ;)

As your site grows, so will your team, who will help you to keep it a spam free zone.

[I don't know about all the automatic blocks and stuff]
