I'm reading this thread, and scratching my head - I search up and have a quick look at the referenced "where's the beep" thread, and I'm thinking to myself... "Beep? vital function for debugging used by every coder he knows?"
I must be missing something...
If win32 was such an "essential building block" to achieving any degree of knowledge in C++ - don't you think Straustrup would have at least *mentioned* it in his book about C++? I don't think he even mentions Microsoft - and only uses the word "Windows" to mean the MS written OS maybe once. He does seem to know as much as almost anyone about C++ though.
And surely there are (as some other poster alluded to) many excellent C++ programmers out there who never even use MS Windows, let alone win32.
Perhaps if you could explain your logic for me, slowly... spell it out - I don't always get things right off the bat..
