Need help updating to SP1 XP

Posted 27 December 2008 - 07:42 PM

I was having problems with Windows XP and I had already had Service pack 3 and Internet Explorer 7.
After repairing my installation of XP from the disk I realized that I could not use IE luckily I have Firefox.
After a while I figured out that I lost my service packs when I repaired my computer.
So now I have IE 7 that I cannot use because I need SP1, 2 and 3.
Here is the problem, I cannot update because everything on my computer is already up to date to the service pack 3.

So the question is how do I re-install service pack one?
To help clarify this more, my current version of windows update will not work because it is up to date to the SP3 and as is my internet explorer. So when I try to update from Microsoft I receive the message that i need IE 7 which I have and cannot use.
I hope that my question is clear.

Thank you

As long as this is a legitimate install of XP & you have the registration number, I would boot off the XP disk & repair the OS. This will remove the dlls & system exes & reinstall them. Nothing more on the system will change. The desktop will appear the same, your installed programs will not be touched.

It's the 2nd repair option, don't choose repair at the 1st screen where it takes you to the DOS prompt. Choose to install XP & it will detect that there is a previously installed version, at this screen select R for repair.

Yes mine is legitimate , I have tried the second repair GUI option twice because I could not figure out why my IE, Firewall, update ect.. would not work and now I when I check to see which SP's I have there are none.

But you can use firefox correct?

If this is the case also try the winsockxp fix. I had to do that on a box at work to get IE working again.

Otherwise repairing should do the trick - or upgrade to IE8. I found IE 7 tends to freeze up alot for me at home and when I upgraded to 8 was working good as new. I still use Firefox as primary browser, but I use IE 8 for testing etc...

After several days of frustration , downloading and installing Service Packs
I came across something on the MS website that said that you have to uninstall IE 7 before repairing XP. Or else IE will not work after the repair.

So after re- installing all the Service packs I then uninstalled IE7 and upgraded IE 6 which was still there. :P
