Web Studio Ideas

Posted 09 January 2009 - 12:59 AM

Hello everyone! I'm working extensively on a Web Development Studio and was wondering if anyone had any cool ideas for features? I'm open to any ideas.

So far I am planning to add support for the following:

CSS
HTML
PHP
Scripting Languages (Javascript, VBScript, etc)

Any ideas/comments for a really nice Web Development Studio?

Well, I guess I should try to clarify first. Are you making something that people can come to, logon and develope web stuff on? Or is it more like a forum?

If the first I would suggest making a Flash or silverlight (if you know C# better than AS) frontend to get some of the designers more interested in what the site has to offer. I would also suggest that you make your code editor act a bit like an IDE (if possible) so that the user can have all the nice things like syntax highlighting and auto-complete (Always thought that would be really cool to have to JS at least). And possibly, a simple vector graphics editor that they can use to make skins (now, this obviously would be a lot of work, but I think it would be damn cool).

If it is more of a forum, I would say you should look into adding stuff for ASP, C#, Java, and other possibly web-based languages.

Hope that helps.

Hey thanks for the input! I am trying to build an editor that can be used to do just about anything. It will be an actual application written in VB.NET so people can install it. It's IDE will be similar to a Dreamweaver-Visual Studio hybrid IDE.

I was planning on auto-complete for Javascript, VBScript, HTML, and CSS.

Perhaps I will have a beta release done soon. I will also post more of its features soon.

Okay it has been a while since I posted anything on this topic. Down to business! I will not being posting a testable version any time soon (not all the functionality is there that I want to include; this is a very large application that I am developing by myself and I don't have much time to devote anymore). I will however be posting a few screen shots soon!

Some of the features as of today:
* Multiple Document Interface
* The IDE toolbars will automatically adjust to the code being entered. i.e., when a coder types "<a " the "anchor" toolbar will be displayed with additional options for creating anchor HTML tags. (This works with pretty much every HTML tag)
* Syntax Highlighting for HTML
* AutoComplete for HTML
* The IDE can be tailored to meet your needs (more on this later :P )
* Complete in-application web browser
* "Document Quick-View": Just press "Ctr + W" then hit "Tab" then all of the open documents appear in a small window and you can just click its icon to go to that window. Very handy when you have a lot of documents open.
* HTML Error finding and correction

Some things I am strongly considering adding to this version:
* Syntax Highlighting and AutoComplete for Javascript, CSS, VBScript, PHP
* A Microsoft Word-like Spell Checker
* Web page templates

Again, I am open to suggestions or comments!

Thanks for reading!

EDIT: The name of the application is tentatively "SkyLight Web Studio"

It is possible that I will make this open source. It is more of a personal accomplishment thing. The IDE is written entirely in VB 2008.

Cheers,
John

EDIT: However, when I get the first version of SkyLight done I will start work on my VBL (Visual Basic Lite) program which will be open source (fairly positive of this). If you want more details on SkyLight or VBL just ask.

This seems a lot like my Web Design app...SiWeb
But mines a bit simpler, it already supports css and html syntax highlighting and AutoComplete, and SiSense(similar to IntelliSense)
it also supports FTP upload, and projects.
Here is a couple of screenshots:

HTML SiSense

And the CSS SiSense
As you can see mines similar to dreamweaver aswell, and there is still a lot of things i haven't implemented(Project Explorer etc), and some bugs i need to fix, the coloring isn't still that perfect but it pretty much works, i might make a thread on DIC 'Share Your Project' after i finish the first beta.

That looks really cool. I'd gladly test it if you ever need someone to test it if you decide to add to it. I didn't know you had made one too, lol. SkyLight also has the little popup tips that tell you what each attribute does (mine acts like the tips that appear under the code in Visual Studio).

And yea... my coloring isn't completely error free (yet) either so do not feel bad. All I have to say is creating a full blown application like Dreamweaver is a lot more work than I had bargained for, but it is just becoming a hobby of mine.

SkyLight Web Studio - Beta 1 will not be released for some time. Sorry for anyone who has been keeping up with this topic.

The delay is due to programming problems and I am implementing even more features into the IDE.

I have some updates and massive upgrades on the IDE. Go look at one of the old screen shots and take a look at the one below (the difference is obvious). I will be working on adding the functionality to the tools this week.
Hopefully by the end of the month a testable version will be available.
