I would suggest vising a site like, IBuyPower. There you can build a complete system from the ground up and see what the total cost is going to be so you can keep it within your price range.

I usually start with the Weekly Special, link at top of page, and customize it to get an idea of cost...

For something that won't cost a fortune to ship to the UK (assuming that's where you are), try Dell, HP, or Gateway. You may also want to go to some of the big High Street retailers to see what kind of deals they can cut you.

£600 will go a long way at your local PC World, you should definitely be able to get a decent high-end system with that and still have some spare for GTA IV :D

Thinking of nipping down to PC World myself soon and getting a new laptop, somehow a Pentium 233 MMX just doesn't quite cut it these days.

I find the terms 'high-end' and 'PC World' don't tend to go together too well. Combined with the fact that I've heard a number of stories recently about shitty tech support from them (as in replacing a dvd-writer 3 times when the motherboard was buggered).

Out of interest Jamillion, what are you running at the moment?

"maybe a nivada G force 8500 (i think thats its name) "

steer clear of the 8500GT, its old and slow
If your not really a gamer, head for the 9500GT (next gen on from the 8500), it will do everything u need,
you wont need anything faster, and avoids some of the nvidia broken graphics problems - at the same price

also steer clear of any special deal with celeron or dual-celeron processors
Ideally a core2duo or so with 2 GB of ram and youll be flying :D
shouldnt cost more than about 400-500 pounds this will buy u a decent setup

I definitely recommend finding a website that's like Newegg but will deliver over across the pond. Building your own computer is very worth while and also rewarding once you've got it up and running.

I really, really, really like to avoid the big brand names (Dell, Compaq, Toshiba, HP, Gateway, Acer etc.). Sure, their computers are "cheaper," this just means the parts they use are made of less quality.

My most favorite brand name is IBM/Lenovo.

My "cheap" HP laptop has taken my abuse from July 2005 until today. I recommend HP when I can.

As for IBM/Lenovo - I specced an R61 out for a friend, and he's loved it. But all the newer ones haven't quite lived up to that level of quality.

No surprises there, Lenovo is designed and made in China these days ;x

Back to the thread.
If your a bit overawed by building your own PC, you cant really go wrong with a barebones system
all you have to do is add a cpu, HDD, ram and DVD, all the rest is done for you (and of course
install your OS). This way you have control over your PC specs.

Try ASUS, Gigabyte and Shuttle for your barebones - all very nice, made tons of them for customers.

if you are running in vista.. try adjusting your RAM and your Vcard.. the G8500 is an old version try using G9000+ Vcard. coz at that budget you can buy much more. and if you had extra money try buying a a quad core. just a suggestion. :)
