hey everyone, in university i am taking a course entitled IT for business management, where this course emphasizes the importance of IT in business organizations and small firms. We took some lessons in this course in making databases in MS Access(i hate that software) to manage small businesses and stuff in them such as employees and goods etc... After we have finished these couple of lessons, the teacher wants us to make a project(database) for a certain business organization and use the ideas and knowledge that we studied before and apply it using access to electronically manage a small business. The teacher wants us to choose a topic or case of a small business organization to do the project on, others in class will be choosing the ordinary and "classic" ideas such as a database for airline reservation or small store etc... but i want to have a more creative case or topic... but i just cant think of one extraordinary creative topic that can sweep all other projects , anyways please guys i need you help, tell me some useful ideas that could be implemented, thanks very much for you help

if you want to beat your other students, just make a greate database,
all the IT companies who are now big, even bill gates stared as a small, craigslist, yahoo and google spring to mind and web 2.0 companies, so you don't need to go too far for examples...

I had a similar project for my COBOL applications final last semester. I made an interactive movie database (IMDB ripoff) in a console application.

It wouldn't be too hard to modify this to allow order placing / inventory...

Just think of any system which has entities "like people" who interact with one another (relationships) and you have a database.

You can do things like...

1) A collectibles shop
2) Doctors office with patients and doctors
3) Car manufacturer (think of having a parts table where parts are made up of other parts)
4) Hardware store
5) Mimic a marketing company where you create print, web, tv content and generate reports using an order/order detail setup. They could have done a job for the Obama campaign.

You could always create a 'Customer Relationship Manager' (CRM) which companies' sales departments use to keep track of how often they ring customers, approach them with sales and offers and in general just keep the relationship positive and strong.

Those things sell for quite a lot of money out in the real world.
