Developing Apps for the G1
Posted 21 January 2009 - 03:11 PM
Since I got one coming - I am anxious to start developing some apps. I am not very experienced in Java so I want to use this as a learning experience.
I got an idea for a few apps so far and would be happy to join a team, start one on source forge or anything I can to get involved in developing some apps.
My ideas so far are:
These two ideas are by request of the T-Mobile reps.
1. A fishing game
2. An app that tells you the date and time of a missed call. currently it just states how many days ago etc...
I have a few more ideas but would love to brainstorm them with people.
If anyone is interested - lets get this going.

And we don't have to limit to g1 development - I forgot to include that.
@abgorn - welcome aboard. I will see how this thread progresses and look into setting up a SourceForge project and we can brainstorm as well as discuss here.
@no2 - I imagine there is... I am hoping by learning from all of this I can land one of those jobs and get out of my dead end one here eventually.

Cool, do you have any idea of any toolkits or libraries that'll be used? I'm not quite sure about dev for the G1 so I don't know if there's an offical one or anything.

I've done a bit, it's kinda annoying. The second request from T-Mobile reps has already been fulfilled. They must've just missed it.
I might get into it more soon, but there are no guarantees. You know what I'm like for projects.

I am going to look in the Android marketplace however one thing I really want is a eBook reader.
I am sure they already exist and if so the better, if not I got some learning to do
I think doing this could be a good learning experience so I am up for this challenge. I am to the point now where I am really enjoying working with Java. If I can master the basics I can possibly work my way into another good programming job since Java is such a huge market around here for some reason.

The categories for phone dev would come under:
* Social networking
* Media consumption, management, editing, or sharing, e.g., photos
* Productivity and collaboration such as email, IM, calendar, etc.
* Gaming
* News and information
* Rethinking of traditional user interfaces
* Use of mash-up functionality
* Use of location-based services
* Humanitarian benefits
* Applications in service of global economic development
* Whatever you're excited about!
I'm not all that great at making games by the way

I am not very good at game dev either.
The dev-kit and everything we will need can be found through that link. I can set us up a source forge once I have some solid ideas.
I am going to go through the marketplace to get a feel for what is already out there.
Do you have any ideas or suggestions? The first app doesn't have to be overly complex, just something simple.

As per the development for the iphone. I've looked into it. Basically you will need to code the entire thing on a mac if you want to run your app. Xcode does make it extremely easy to do that for sure. Also, with all the other dev tools for the iphone it does make it easy... again if you have a mac.

How about a simple RSS feed reader? That shouldn't be complex, maybe getting access to the internet would be the hardest thing to do in it. the android.util has classes for XML witch we could use.

That sounds pretty good also.
@markhazlett9 we are working on the G1 & like you just stated I am not sure our apps will port over easily to the iPhone.

iPhone apps are made in Objective C, G1 apps are made in Java.
