Distressed...Not sure where to start

Post icon  Posted 23 January 2009 - 03:45 PM

I have recently been charged with the task of building a online testing module. I would love to do it in PHP since this language seems to be more intuitive to learn and well supported via the users. However, my employer only supports the M$ monster so I am forced to ASP.NET. I have decided to use the C# language since it appears to be more robust.

My problem is I do not know where to begin. Would it be best to learn some C# first or just dive right in to learning ASP.NET with Visual Studio Express. I also need to through in some database knowledge somewhere as well. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also, I only did a quick look to see if anyone else had this issue so if it has come up before just send me the link to the thread.

Thanks

I would learn the basics of C# before you delve into ASP; once you do then learning ASP will be easier/make more sense

I'm a Java EE developer, so I'm no Microsoft advocate, but I have some experience using C# and ASP.NET via Visual Studio 2008. It's bound to a platform, but it's a solid product. I think you will be glad your boss chose the "monster" once you have enough experience to compare it to PHP. It's probably better for your career as well.

I agree with xCraftyx.

I learned both together, and it was surprisingly smooth. YMMV

Thanks for the input. I am going to do a little work in the C# area before moving on.
