CrossOver Chromium (Google Chrome for Linux)

Posted 27 January 2009 - 12:49 AM

CrossOver Chromium is an open-source browser project that aims to build a safer, faster, and more stable way for all Internet users to experience the web. The Chromium codebase is the basis for Google’s Chrome browser.

Excellent. Works better than I expected.

In one sense, this is disappointing, because you're essentially running the windows version wrapped up Wine. CrossOver, a company that takes the Wine and bundles it up with added value and a price tag, did an impressive job.

In another sense, having a windows based browser, running on top of a free version of CrossOver, on the Linux box, is exceptionally handy. I just visited YouTube and checked out a couple feeds that simply don't work on Linux. The things that will crash you out dramatically in IE on Wine only hurt this version of Chrome a little. So, if you use Linux and occasionally need to visit windows web world, this is a great tool

Yeah, I was pretty bummed out when I read that it was running on Wine.

I guess it is what it is. :D :^:

Bleh!

The browser itself runs really nice, & I like how it handles borked sites. It allows the tab to die rather than taking the entire browser down in flames w/ it.

However, while it is nice & all, it's also got to MAJOR flaws that will keep me from using it.

1st & foremost, because this runs on Wine all access with the file system is based on the Wine & not my native Linux. As well to Javascript browser scripts the browser shoes up as Opera. Maybe this is just from my lack of experience of Wine, but it's a pain for downloads & file attachments.

2ndly, the entire browser crashes if I'm not online. I tried launching apache, & running 127.0.0.1 as my homepage, but that only buys me about 40 seconds of usability until it again crashes.

They are getting there on porting Chrome natively, and this is the prove to it, I guess.

Running a Windows APP on Wine is far from porting it. It's forcing it work in a fake Windows environment.

A properly ported application will run on it's own in the OS it has been ported too.
