not sure what to do (college course)

Posted 28 January 2009 - 04:58 PM

hi

I'm not sure what to do with getting educated can people give there opinions on what way you would go

I'll just tell you what I hope to achieve before explaining my situation.

my ultimate goal

This I've not totally decided yet I would I've like to do freelance work or climb the business ladder as it where
I think I need to get qualifications to get higher up in business is this true?

my situation

I'm 20 years old was unable to get a plumbing apprenticeship after getting all the college qualifications. so I went back to college to do a software development course this being my first year. I'm partly bored with the college course because there teaching me most of what I already know. I thought I would be doing more advanced things part of the reason I never choses to do IT at school anyway

what ways I'm thinking of taking

I'm thinking next year that I might be able to leave college and go on to university to do programming as I've got a few other qualifications which might enable me to get in.

the other option I'm thinking is to do a computer u teach course although I don't know how employers view these qualifications.

what way do you think I should take

with not knowing which way I want to take, freelance or working for someone. which path do you advice I take do a computer u teach course or go to university or is there any other ways you can suggest

hope this isn't confusing thanks for your time and suggestions

As I don't know which part of the world you're in, it's not easy for me personally to answer. If your first language is English, then a simple course in English grammar would certainly prove helpful, especially if you want to climb the business ladder! ;)

I wouldn't recommend any of these computeach courses, I always hear terrible stories of people getting ripped off. Honestly, I'm not gonna be much help because I didn't do college or university: I'm 18, started when I was 16 and just built a portfolio. :) (And I work now)

I guess I'd say college/university isn't really too important over here. It's a rare skill in the UK, and if you can do it, people can see that you can do it. :)

@KYA: College is like a slightly higher education, university is like your colleges over there.

wow i didnt know that....british people are funny :P. i would say go to a university then. Most programming class wont take you very advanced into the language, but thats not really the point. if you understand the basic concepts of the language and how they work, then you should be able to figure out the advanced stuff for yourself and while on the job. but you are most likely going to need that piece of paper to advance yourself higher in a company. because without it, you will most likely find that you hit the ceiling on your salary and on the position in the company alot sooner than you may want to..

Generally it's college then university. College earns you something called UCAS points which help determine which universities you'd be suited to go to.
